PRINCIPALS
MESSAGE: Sep. 7, 2004 |
Come Back to School Tonight
I look forward to seeing all of you this evening at Back-to-School
Night at 7p.m. (6:45 p.m. for the Hall “0” period Band).
In order to protect and preserve the new blacktop and the play
structure currently under construction, parking will not be permitted
on the blacktop behind school. If you must drive, park at Piper
Park. Carpooling and walking are great ways to reduce the number
of cars trying to park in the area.
API Scores
Last week the state released its annual Academic Performance
Index (API) scores for California public schools. The index
is derived from last year’s standardized test scores
and is based on a scale of 200 to 1,000, with a state target
of 800 for each school. Hall has consistently scored above
800 and this year’s score falls within the range of scores
over the last several years. Over the last four years the school’s
API score has fluctuated between 865 and 884 (871; 865; 884;
875).
Every year the staff analyzes the standardized test scores,
identifying areas of strength and areas of improvement. We have
already begun that process this year and will continue to learn
from this, and other assessment data throughout the year.
Hall
on Film
Hall is honored to be one of a handful of schools selected
to be profiled in a documentary film about student council
elections. A small film crew will be following the candidates
around throughout the election process with an eye to produce
a documentary for theatrical release. This is a great opportunity
to showcase the character and talents of our students. If you
have any questions about the documentary or the filming process,
please contact me directly.
Honor Roll and Principal’s
List
Congratulations to the students who earned Principal’s
List or Honor Roll achievement based on last quarter’s
grades. Honor Roll students earned between a 3.5 and 3.99 GPA
and Principal’s List students earned a 4.0 GPA (A’s
in all classes). I commend these students for their impressive
academic accomplishments. I look forward to honoring even more
students for this year’s first quarter.
[N.B.: Students
on the Principal’s List and Honor Roll are listed on the online
PDF version of the Hall Weekly Bulletin. —ed.]

“WEST SIDE STORY” CASTING
Thurs & Fri, Sept. 9 & 10, 3:30–5:30pm
Casting for “West Side Story” will be held this Thursday
and Friday, Sept. 9 and Sept.10, 3:30-5:30pm. Those who have taken
dance lessons should stay until 6:00pm. Performers should come only
on the day they signed up for (sign-up sheets are in the school office). They
need to sing a song of their choice, and if singing isn’t
their “forte,” they are welcome to sing something easy such
as “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” Everyone who comes to Casting
will be in the play. There is a performer’s fee of $65, but
scholarships are available for anyone who needs one. There are lots of
boys’ parts in this play, so encourage your sons to join us. Almost
all of the boys’ scenes are done as a group (as a Jets or Sharks
gang member), which include fight scenes and comedy numbers custom made
for some of our Hall boys! Have them bring friends — we guarantee
a great time!
Here is the rehearsal schedule:
— The full cast will come on Fridays from 3:30-5:30pm.
— The main
characters will come to rehearse scenes and solos on
Tuesdays from 3:30-5:30pm.
—
From November 3 until the performances
(Nov 19, 20 & 21),
there will be more and later rehearsals. The full schedule
is available and will be given out at the first rehearsal.
— contact
director Becky Reed if
you need a copy of the rehearsal schedule sooner, or if you have
other questions
CHALK-A-LOT FAIR
Friday, Oct. 1, 3:15-5:00pm • Hall Blacktop
The annual Chalk Fair held at Hall Middle School is coming
up soon. Bring your family, friends and neighbors. The blacktop
has plenty of room! Mark your calendar for Friday, October 1st,
3:15-5:00pm right after school. Spread the word!
In addition to sidewalk squares for chalk drawings, there will
be music, food, drinks, face painting, and other fun. We’d
love to have you and your art, with your own special style.
We’re looking for volunteers!
•
If you are
interested in helping, sign up at the Chalk-A-Lot volunteer table
at Back-to-School Night or contact Leigh Estes.
• If
you are a local artist, or know a local artist who would like to
participate and help inspire the youth chalkers, contact Bean Dubin.
•
Finally, if you have extra chalk (large or small) to donate from
the San Rafael festival or elsewhere, please drop it off at the
Hall office in the cardboard box marked “Chalk-A-Lot.”
