Hall Gets a Full-Time Counselor
Ever wonder what your donations to the Corte Madera Larkspur Schools
Foundation do for the district? I will give you just one powerful
example. Because of the hard work of the Foundation volunteers
and the generosity of the school community, both Hall and Neil
Cummins now have a full time counselor to support students every
day. Cookie Morin will now be working full time at Neil Cummins.
The students, staff, and administration at Hall are sad to see
Ms. Morin leave, but we take comfort in knowing that the students
who come from Neil Cummins will have had an opportunity to work
with her. At Hall we are excited to welcome Bridget
Addison as
our new counselor. Ms. Addison has experience in working with middle
school students, most recently at Roosevelt Middle School in San
Francisco. Ms. Morin will be working with Ms. Addison to make the
transition as smooth as possible, and we are confident she will
fit right in to the Hall community.
A huge THANK YOU to the Foundation and everyone who gives their
time and money to enrich the educational program at Hall. Our school
is made better, and our students are supported through your generosity.
Election
Documentary
On September 9 the Fall Student Council Election kicked off with
an informational meeting. More than thirty students showed up
to find out about the election requirements and process. This
year the election is even more exciting because we are being
featured in a documentary film, tentatively titled The
Third Monday in October. A crew of three has been chronicling the election
process as it unfolds. They will continue to film through the
Election Assembly and the announcement of the new Student Council.
The film is being produced by Big Year Productions, a documentary
company whose award winning work focuses on empowering young
people through film. We are excited to have been one of only
a handful of schools chosen to participate in this film.
This is the week that the election really gets going. Candidates
will have their posters and campaign materials approved this morning
and posted throughout the day. Speeches will also be approved today,
and students will practice them prior to the Election Assembly.
The process comes to an exciting climax Thursday when all of the
candidates give their speeches at the Election Assembly. The student
body will then return to their classes to cast their votes. The
new Council will be announced during SSR. Parents are invited to
come and enjoy the impressive campaign speeches on Thursday. The
Assembly is from 11:48am to 12:48pm in the gym.
The students have quickly adjusted to having a camera crew on
campus. The filmmakers have expressed how impressed they are with
the energy and enthusiasm of our students. They have managed to
capture several spirited political discussions and have commented
on how informed and expressive our students are.
If you have any questions about the election process or the documentary
film, please feel free to contact me directly (927-6978).
Play Structure
Completed
The new play structure at Hall was completed last week. Eighth-grade
PE students got a sneak preview the week before and got to try
out the equipment. The response has been extremely positive,
and even the eighth graders who questioned the need for a play
structure in a middle school were seen enjoying themselves right
along with the sixth graders.
In order to keep the equipment safe and to preserve the new blacktop,
parking will no longer be permitted on the blacktop area.

STUDENT COUNCIL ELECTIONS
Election Day: Thurs., Sep. 23
Election day is Thursday, September 23. Please check the calendar
section for important election dates.
CHALK-A-LOT FAIR
Friday, Oct. 1, 3:15-5:00pm • Hall Blacktop
The annual Chalk Fair held at Hall Middle School is coming
up soon. Bring your family, friends and neighbors. The blacktop
has plenty of room! Mark your calendar for Friday, October 1st,
3:15-5:00pm right after school. Spread the word!
In addition to sidewalk squares for chalk drawings, there will
be music, food (chocolate included!), drinks, face painting, and
other fun. This is a community event for all ages, so bring along
family, friends, and neighbors. We’d
love to have you and your art, with your own special style.
We’re looking for volunteers!
•
If you are
interested in helping, sign up at the Chalk-A-Lot volunteer table
at Back-to-School Night or contact Leigh Estes.
• If
you are a local artist, or know a local artist who would like to
participate and help inspire the youth chalkers, contact Bean Dubin.
•
Finally, if you have extra chalk (large or small) to donate from
the San Rafael festival or elsewhere, please drop it off at the
Hall office in the cardboard box marked “Chalk-A-Lot.”

“WEST SIDE STORY”
Parent meeting: Tuesday, Sept. 21, 7:00pm • Hall
Library
At least one parent of each performer needs to come to
the Parent Meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 7:00pm in the Hall
Library. Every parent must volunteer, so think about which volunteer
position(s) you’d like to sign up for: coordinator
of costumes, advertising, cast party or clean-up, set designer,
prompter, costume sewer, rehearsal assistant or worker at the
performances (ticket sales, etc). Plus each parent
must sign up for a shift as dressing room
chaperone, so bring
your calendar. And, bring your checkbook — the
performer’s
fee is $65 (scholarships are available), plus there are some
inexpensive costumes that we will order for you.

HALL SCHOOL CAMPUS IMPROVEMENT WORK DAYS
Wednesdays: Sept. 29, Oct. 13 & Nov. 10 •
9:00am–12:00pm
Saturdays: Oct. 23 & Nov. 20 • 9:00am–1:00pm
We’re ready for another year of campus improvement and
beautification! Hall is looking great (think of how it
looked last year at this time!), thanks to the generous support
of the PTA, the efforts of all of you who came to work days last
year, and Jeff Winkler and Steve Curl, who oversaw the lawn in
the circle area and the installation of weed barrier and mulch. We
learned a lot last year about what plants do best around Hall
— plants have to be drought resistant, wind resistant,
and deer proof. Hall’s resident herd of deer obviously
doesn’t read the lists of what’s deer resistant;
although agapanthus and hardenbergia are on
all the lists, our deer think both are delicious.
Our goals this
year are to plant the area in the courtyard by the music room
(and some adjacent areas), the area under the new signboard,
the fences facing the police station, and the area around the
new flagpole (after installation) in front of the office. We
also will work on installing benches at the circle area, and
we always have pruning and weeding to do.
Please mark these dates
down on your calendar for Hall Middle School Campus Improvement
work days (more days to be announced after winter break):
Saturdays, 10/23 and 11/20 from 9:00am
to 1:00pm
Wednesdays, 9/29, 10/13, and 11/10 from 9:00am to 12:00pm
If you can
come by anytime, please do, even for an hour or two. Community
service hours apply for all students. Watch the
signboard and bulletin for reminders.
