PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: Oct. 4, 2004

The Results Are In!
In my last message I mentioned that the student council campaign and Election Assembly were a huge success. The students at Hall have chosen the new student council. I am proud of all of the candidates for running great campaigns and getting involved in student government at Hall. The new student council is:

President:  Sam
Vice President:  Danny
Secretary:  Katie
Treasurer:  Karl
Activities:  Shay & Rachael
Publicity:  Lela & Gina

I look forward to working with the new student council. The election helped identify the issues that are important to the school such as school dances and lunchtime activities. I hope all of the candidates continue to be involved in school-wide activities.

Playing Safe
The new play structure has been a huge hit with the kids. Before school and during recess and lunch the kids flock to the structure to enjoy the range of activities it has to offer. Physical Education classes have also begun to use the structure by creating a workout routine where students rotate through a variety of physical activities.

With the popularity of the structure has come the need for clear rules and procedures in order to keep students safe. The structure provides new and unique ways to spin, climb, dangle and hang. We have made sure we have adult supervision every time the students are on the play structure. By monitoring its usage we have been able to generate guidelines and procedures to help keep kids safe while playing. I will be meeting with homerooms this week and next week to review these guidelines for the play structure. By doing this we will be able to ensure that the kids can remain safe while they play.

PART Training
Last week I spent two days at the Marin County Office of Education being trained in Professional Assault Response Training, along with several other Marin administrators. The training focused on communicating to de-escalate a situation and how to keep students safe in a crisis. I consider myself fortunate to work in a school where teachers have high behavioral expectations for students and where the adults on campus know the students.

CALLING ALL MATHLETES!
Tuesdays, 3:15pm • Room 402

Students interested in trying out for the Mathletes team and competing countywide for math fame should attend the first practice Tuesday, October 5, at 3:15pm in Ms. Wethington’s classroom (Room 402). We will hold practices every Tuesday after school, and our first competition will be November 16. We would like to have both 7th and 8th grade teams this year, so all interested students should clear their Tuesday afternoon calendars and attend.

HALL NEWS

HEALTH ISSUES/STATE MANDATES
Hearing testing at Hall: Friday, Oct. 8
Hearing testing will be done at Hall on Friday, October 8th. All 8th graders will be tested as well as all new students to the district who haven’t had their hearing tested at the required intervals, 3-year IEPs, initial assessments, and “concerns.” If you have any concerns about your child’s hearing, or have other health issues, please contact me ASAP. If you have recent hearing test or vision exam records, please give me a copy.

Vision testing will be done soon. Color vision will be done on kindergarten boys soon.

The State also requires up-to-date immunization records for all students, and physical exams on entry into 1st grade. Since the standard of practice is to get one on the 5th birthday, please submit that yellow form (Kaiser’s is white) to me ASAP if you haven’t already done so. The report to the state is due soon.

I am at Neil Cummins all day Monday and Tuesday mornings and at Hall on Friday. Please feel free to contact me with any health concerns you have regarding your child. It’s a pleasure working with you and your children.
— Thank you, Sharon Schielein R.N.
