PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: Oct. 18, 2004

Academic Support at Hall
This week marks the beginning of after-school academic support for students. The program is intended for students who are in need of additional support in order to meet grade-level standards. Last week a notification was sent in backpack mail to the parents of all students who were identified by their teachers as qualifying for additional support. The support program runs Monday through Thursday in the library from 3:30–4:30pm. Students can attend the Monday/ Wednesday session or the Tuesday/ Thursday session. Hall teacher Jennifer Cornaggia will provide support to students. If you have questions about the support program, or your child’s eligibility for it, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Smoky Skies
Last week we experienced smoky skies from several fires up north. As a precaution, physical education teachers altered their lesson plans to keep students from being active outside. While we allowed students to be outside during lunch, we did not allow them to run around. Several students were disappointed with not being able to get their daily soccer or football game in, but we thought it better to err on the side of caution. We will continue to monitor air quality reports and respond accordingly.

Yankees Beat Grizzlies
Last week the Hall staff took on the Neil Cummins staff in a game of softball. It was a great event that brought the two staffs together in friendly competition. While Hall’s staff is only half the size of the Neil Cummins staff, we managed to keep it competitive, but were narrowly defeated. The analogy I would use would be a large market team like the Yankees playing against the Fresno Grizzlies. Only minor injuries were reported. In discussion for the next event are bowling, flag football, and volleyball. My suggestion of online computer games hasn’t gone very far.

SCHOOL NEWS & EVENTS

Attention All Mathletes!
Mathletes practice on Tuesday, October 19, will be held at lunchtime in Ms. Wethington’s classroom (room 402) instead of after school. There will also be an additional practice on Thursday at lunchtime. 6th and 7th graders are especially encouraged to attend.
— Ms. Wethington

Campus Improvement Day
Saturday, Oct. 23, 10:00am–1:00pm
Mark your calendar! This Saturday, October 23rd, from 10-1, come help improve our campus for students, staff, and parents. We'll be planting in the courtyard between the music room and office. We'll plant a Japanese Maple, bergenia, liriope, and get started on the hundreds of bulbs (daffodils, iris, and hyacinthoides) that we have. It will be beautiful next spring and you can feel good that you were part of it. All students who help will get community service hours.
— Contact Maija Norstad for more information

7th Grade Owls Project
Part of the focus on owls in our ecosystems unit includes a visit from Victoria Saxe, the science illustrator, provided by Youth in Arts. During her four-day visit, Ms. Saxe will teach the students how to draw owls for the cover of the research project. This project, an exercise in technical writing, will give each student an opportunity to learn about a particular species of North American owl as a top consumer and as an intrinsic part of a food web. To support students, classroom and library time and materials will be provided. Homework during this time will be limited to project work. A rubric will be distributed October 20. Students will need to budget time for project completion by November 2.

We will end our unit with the dissection of owl pellets, prey bone identification and mounting, and a computer-generated graph of prey types and numbers. All will be an important part of our Open House display.
— Ms. Smith

Geography Bee Meetings
Weekly, starting October 26, 7:45am
Students who are interested in participating in the National Geography Bee should attend the weekly meetings that start Tuesday, October 26, at 7:45am with Mr. Rodgers in Room 504. Students will learn and share their knowledge about geography through these weekly meetings in order to pass the National Geographic qualifying exam, and then compete at the school and county levels.

For Parents Only, Educate Yourself on Teen Drug Use!
Tuesday, Oct. 26, 7:00pm • Hall Library
Mark your calendars for our first Parent Education discussion of the year on Oct. 26th at 7:00pm (Hall Library). We are fortunate to host a panel of 2 students and their parents, as well as a teacher Phoenix Academy. Phoenix Academy is a charter high school in Marin offering support for teens and their families for substance abuse. Please come to listen to their personal stories of drug use and abuse. Hall PTA has planned this discussion in conjunction with Red Ribbon Week, a curriculum offered at school for our students to learn about drug use. Please take this opportunity to educate yourself on the reality of drug use among teens in Marin.
