6th Grade Pumpkin Carving Halloween Event
Friday, October 29, 2:30pm

On this Friday, October 29th, at 2:30pm the sixth grade class will be celebrating Halloween as they carve pumpkins together. Each student will be bringing home a pumpkin to light up your house on Friday afternoon. Volunteer help is needed. Please contact Paula Turner and let her know you’d love to help. Preparations will begin earlier and Paula will let you know when to arrive. Also the pumpkins will be carried home in plastic bags and we hope they all make it safely, so maybe think about your travel plans for that day. Happy Halloween to All!!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: Oct. 25, 2004

Parent Education Night
Tomorrow night is the first Parent Education Night of the year. The focus of this parent night is drug use among middle school students. Representatives from Phoenix Academy, a charter school in Marin for students with substance issues, will provide valuable information about teen drug use. Two Phoenix Academy students and their parents will talk to you about student drug use and parent perceptions and responses. I hope to see many of you here in the library at 7:00pm for this informative event. A similar event was held last year at Neil Cummins and was very well received.

GATE Parent Committee
This year we want to have a GATE Parent Committee made up of GATE parents from Neil Cummins and Hall schools. Let’s consider our GATE issues/concerns K-8! This committee will help us examine, discuss, and consider changes and improvements to our GATE offerings in Larkspur. Our plan is to meet with this small group 2-4 times over the coming year, with perhaps some minimal research tasks for committee members in between meetings. The committee will be a low time commitment, but is a vital ingredient needed to improve the quality of our program.

Please email Mr. Carvey at ccarvey@marin.k12.ca.us or call 927-6965 ext.1269 to let him know you are interested!

SCHOOL NEWS & EVENTS

For Parents Only, Educate Yourself on Teen Drug Use!
Tuesday, Oct. 26, 7:00pm • Hall Library
Mark your calendars for our first Parent Education discussion of the year on Oct. 26th at 7:00pm (Hall Library). We are fortunate to host a panel of 2 students and their parents, as well as a teacher Phoenix Academy. Phoenix Academy is a charter high school in Marin offering support for teens and their families for substance abuse. Please come to listen to their personal stories of drug use and abuse. Hall PTA has planned this discussion in conjunction with Red Ribbon Week, a curriculum offered at school for our students to learn about drug use. Please take this opportunity to educate yourself on the reality of drug use among teens in Marin.

Red Ribbon Week
October 23-31, 2004

Red Ribbon Week is an event that has become a national symbol of drug prevention, education and awareness. Research shows that children are less likely to use alcohol and other drugs when parents and other role models are clear and consistent in their opposition to substance use and abuse. Take some time to talk with your children about this very important topic. Not sure how to answer their questions? Go online with them to research the answers together. Red Ribbon Week is a time to pledge to live a safe and drug-free life.
— If you have any questions please feel free to talk with me: Cookie Morin: 927-6965!

Lost and Found!!!
Have you noticed anything missing?? Please swing by the table out by the library and see if your favorite lost piece of clothing or notebook or who knows what else may have been turned in… this is the place it would be… but not for forever. On November 1st the table will be cleared of all articles with clothing donated to charity. So come by today and take a look. — Thanks, Anne Gilberg

Warm Clothing Drive for Ritter Center
Nov. 3-5, 2004
Now is the time to set aside items to help our community’s neediest members get through a cold, wet winter. On behalf of Ritter Center and with co-sponsorship of Marin Sunrise Rotary, the Hall PTA Community Service committee and Student Council will be collecting items at the drop-off circle on three mornings: Wednesday, Nov. 3 through Friday, Nov. 5. All warm clothing is appreciated. Requested items also include waterproof outerwear, men’s socks, blankets and sleeping bags. Thanks!

Hall Middle School Cross Country Team
Our Cross Country team has been training hard since the beginning of the school year and we have been fortunate enough to gather a dedicated group of runners who have placed high in our first two competitions. Andrew, 6th grade boys’ team and Katie, 8th grade girls’ team, have two first place finishes in our first two races! We’ve been competing against a dozen other middle schools from around the area and had 7 runners place in the top 5 of their races at San Domenico. There are individual races for boys and girls in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades.

The list of excellent runners is too long to mention in this limited space. Suffice it to say that we’ve got 20 highly motivated, truly dedicated runners wearing brand new HMS Cougar colors! We have our championship meet on October 28th at the Marin Civic Center and we’re looking to show off our new jerseys and competitive spirit!
