Campus Improvement Days
Wednesday, Nov. 10 • 9:00am–12:00pm
Saturday, Nov. 20 • 9:00am–12:00pm
On
Saturday, Oct. 23, we had a rainy workday, so there were only two
of us planting in the courtyard. Thanks to Rick
Krueger, we got
almost 300 bulbs, a japanese maple, and bergenia planted there. There
is still some more to do in this location, but we got a lot of
it done. Thank
you, Rick, for braving the weather!
Please
join us for workdays on Wednesday, Nov. 10, and especially
Saturday, Nov. 20, which will be our daffodil planting
day. We
have hundreds of daffodils to plant around the school, so be
there rain or shine and think how beautiful it will be in
the spring. If it’s a cold wet day, come for an hour and
you'll really deserve that chair in front of the fire for the
rest of the day! Look for the reminder in backpack mail.

MESSAGE: Nov. 1, 2004 |
Counseling Transitions
This year we have been fortunate to be able to hire a full time
counselor at Hall Middle School. Ms. Addison joined us several
weeks ago and quickly became a valuable member of the support
team. Unfortunately, Ms. Addison has had to resign her position
as counselor in order to spend more time with her mother who
has taken ill. We will miss Ms. Addison and wish only the best
for her and her family.
Fortunately, a new counselor has been hired! Molly
Cohen will
begin work at Hall on Monday, November 8. Ms. Cohen grew up in
Marin and comes to us from Balboa High School. She is eager to
meet the students and the staff, and I am confident she will
make a smooth transition to Hall.
Parent Education Drug Panel
Last week we hosted the first Parent
Education Night of the year. The focus of the discussion was
on drug use among middle school students. Two students from Phoenix
Academy, a charter school for students working through substance
issues, and their parents shared their experiences and perspectives.
Needless to say, their stories sparked numerous questions and
great discussions. I was deeply impressed by the courage and
candor of the students and parents who shared their very personal
experiences.
A big Thank You to Jeannie Perry for coordinating the event.
Jeannie has done a wonderful job of reviving the parent education
program at Hall. Events like this provide valuable information
and allow parents to make connections and share strategies. I
look forward to our next event and hope to see you there.
QSP Wraps Up
The annual QSP magazine subscription fundraiser
ended last week in a flurry of magazine orders.
The students managed to sell over $27,000 worth of magazine
subscriptions. Twenty-nine students qualified for an afternoon
of laser tag in Rohnert Park, and Ms. Wollman’s homeroom
sold the most subscriptions per student. They will be treated
to free Jamba Juice and compete against the staff in a lunchtime
kickball game. At the end of the turn-in morning the top sellers
were Nicole, Sean, Sam, and Rob.
Congratulations to all four of you for selling over thirty orders
each and qualifying for the Money Booth.
This fundraiser could not happen without the dedicated work
of parent volunteers. Marlene Foster has yet again managed the
numerous orders, checks, and prizes associated with this activity.
Every year she does an amazing job and helps raise much needed
money for the student council. Thank you, Marlene, for all you
do.

Warm Clothing Drive for Ritter Center
Nov. 3-5, 2004
This is the week! Please bring warm clothing and bedding to the drop-off circle
before school on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, Nov. 3-5. For your
convenience, this week’s backpack mail includes a bag for each family, provided
by Marin Sunrise Rotary, our co-sponsor for the drive. Students receive one hour
of community service credit for each bag donated with a completed slip attached.
We've
already experienced the season’s first bout of cold, wet weather. People in
our community need warm clothing (including socks), rain
gear, sleeping bags and blankets. Ritter Center in San
Rafael will pick items up on Friday and distribute them to those
in need. Thank you for your participation.

past rehearsals).

Parent Ed: Help on Parenting
Thursday, Nov. 18 • 9:00am at Neil Cummins
The Neil Cummins PTA is excited to announce the upcoming presentation of Alexandra
Mathews, Ph.D., immediately after our Nov. 18th General Membership meeting. (meeting
at 8:30am in the Neil Cummins Staff Room, presentation at about 9:00am). Alexandra
will be speaking on the topic, “Optimum Parenting for Your Child’s
Success & Happiness.” Dr. Matthews will discuss how parenting styles
reliably and predictably affect child development and adult outcome. Come prepared
to do a self-assessment on your parenting style, engage in a discussion on who
in the family is responsible for solving specific problems, and learn about why
family dinners matter. You may learn how to put an end to nagging (theirs and
yours), teach financial responsibility to children starting in preschool, and
stop short-order cooking.
Dr. Alexandra Matthews has been in the field of psychology
working with children and families for 20 years. She recently spoke to the
Corte Madera/Larkspur Mother’s Club to rave reviews. Come learn some parenting
tips, and enjoy some snacks, too!
