PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: Nov. 8, 2004

A Time of Giving
This is the time of year that our students, with the leadership of the student council, strive to help those in need throughout Marin. Over the month and a half, our students will give their time and resources for the Warm Clothing Drive, the Adopt-A-Family program, Pennies for Peace, UNICEF, and a Canned Food Drive. I am always impressed with the energy and enthusiasm with which the students approach these activities. I am also grateful to the parents of our students, without whom these activities would not succeed. I will keep you up to date on the progress of these activities over the next several weeks.

A Time of Carving
The annual sixth grade pumpkin carving event was a huge success this year. Thanks to the generosity of Paradise Foods, all one hundred and twenty five sixth graders got their own pumpkin to carve during sixth period. Every year Paradise Foods donates and delivers pumpkins for our students to carve and take home. Their generosity is magnified by the parent volunteers to organize and manage the event. Because of their work, the activity was smooth and fun.

A Time of Dancing
Speaking of parent volunteers making events successful, the first dance of the year was a great event. Over 140 students danced and ate pizza throughout the night. If you didn’t get a chance to chaperone this dance, fear not – there will be another one in the spring.

A Time of Running
The week before last, several teachers and I watched the final cross-country race of the year at the Civic Center in San Rafael. We were all impressed with the Hall runners who had a great showing. We were proud of all of the boys and girls in blue who ran their hearts out. Chris Samet and Bruce Mendle have done a great job this year of keeping the cross-country team running and representing Hall at meets. Special congratulations to Andrew for winning the sixth grade race by a large margin.

Students of the Month
Every month grade level teachers at each grade identify two students for the positive impact they have had on the classroom. These Students of the Month stand out for their positive attitudes, relationships with peers and adults, and their contributions in and out of the classroom.
Sixth Grade: Amanda & Alexander
Seventh Grade: Drew & Molly
Eighth Grade: Peter & Emma

Principal’s List and Honor Roll
We have finished the first quarter of the school year. At the end of each of these four grading periods we take a moment to honor the students who have excelled at their studies. Honor Roll students have earned between a 3.5 and a 3.9 grade point average on a four-point scale. Principal’s List students have earned a perfect 4.0 with A’s in all classes. I applaud the focus and determination that these students have given to their school work. Congratulations on a job well done – keep up the good work!
—Daniel Norbutas, Principal

Lists of all Honor Roll, Principal’s List, Cross Country Team members, and Students of the Month are on the online PDF version of the Hall Weekly Bulletin, available to Hall community members.

Parent Ed: Help on Parenting
Thursday, Nov. 18 • 9:00am at Neil Cummins

The Neil Cummins PTA is excited to announce the upcoming presentation of Alexandra Mathews, Ph.D., immediately after our Nov. 18th General Membership meeting. (meeting at 8:30am in the Neil Cummins Staff Room, presentation at about 9:00am).  Alexandra will be speaking on the topic, “Optimum Parenting for Your Child’s Success & Happiness.” Dr. Matthews will discuss how parenting styles reliably and predictably affect child development and adult outcome. Come prepared to do a self-assessment on your parenting style, engage in a discussion on who in the family is responsible for solving specific problems, and learn about why family dinners matter. You may learn how to put an end to nagging (theirs and yours), teach financial responsibility to children starting in preschool, and stop short-order cooking.

Dr. Alexandra Matthews has been in the field of psychology working with children and families for 20 years. She recently spoke to the Corte Madera/Larkspur Mother’s Club to rave reviews. Come learn some parenting tips, and enjoy some snacks, too!
