MESSAGE: Nov. 22, 2004 |
A Reflective Staff
While our students were enjoying a day off of school on November 12, the
staff was here hard at work. We spent most of the day analyzing, making
meaning, and planning for the future based on the STAR test results from
last year. We spent much of our time in department groups (math/science,
language arts/social studies) to analyze performance patterns from the
last three years. Overall our students performed very well last year.
Our scores, as compared to previous years, and compared nationally were
quite exceptional. But the Hall staff strives for continual improvement,
thus we identified several strategies to further enhance the educational
experience of our students. As a school we will devote time to articulate
the language arts and social studies curriculum both within Hall and
with Neil Cummins. We also will examine ways to bridge the performance
gap of special education students, Latino students, and boys. I am very
proud of the instructional programs that our teachers provide for students,
and impressed with the energy they put into reflecting on their work
and continually refining their craft.
Mathletes Challenge
The first of four county-wide Mathletes competition was held in Novato
last week. Under the leadership and guidance of Ms. Wethington and Ms.
Ahle, Hall fielded a seventh and an eighth grade team. For many
members of the seventh grade team it was their first exposure to the
Mathletes competitions. They enjoyed the experience and are eager for
the next one. The eighth grade team is chock full of veterans – many
of whom were part of last year’s seventh grade team that finished
second in the county. This experienced squad picked up where they left
off last year and finished second in the first competition of this year.
The next competition dates are January 11, February 8 and March 15.
Lucky for you, there is no need to wait until January to get
your Mathletes experience. Here is a sample problem from last
week’s competition. As I have done in the past, I offer
a trip to Baskin Robbins for you and your child during lunch
to the first three parents who submit correct responses to the
problem. Your child may offer support, but you must be able to
explain your answer. Remember the Academic Honesty Policy is
in effect, even when it comes to parent work. Good luck, and
enjoy!
A 12’ x 15’ rectangular room has 8’ high walls
that need two coats of paint. Ignoring any doors or windows,
how many one-gallon cans of paint must you buy to paint the walls,
provided that a quart of paint will cover 100 square feet of
surface?

Lunch Snacks
We have sent home a form requesting your opinions about our lunchtime snack
options. We are very interested in your input. Please take a minute to
fill out and return the form, so that we can provide lunch options that
you and your children would like.
Canned Food Drive
The canned food drive starts Monday, November 22. There will be a prize
for the homeroom that brings in the most cans. We’ll count all
cans over 8 ounces as one can. Any can under 8 ounces will be counted
as half a can. Please bring in as many cans as possible.
