PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: Dec. 13, 2004

Parent Education
The second parent education opportunity of the year is scheduled for February 3, and it is shaping up to be a very special event. The event is modeled after a book club, so it will provide a great opportunity for parents to discuss a relevant book on child development, share their insights, and learn from one another and the text. The discussion will be centered around the book Right from Wrong - Instilling a Sense of Integrity in your Child by Michael Riera and Joseph Di Prisco. It is an excellent book that addresses a wide range of adolescent issues and parenting strategies. Hall counselor Ms. Cohen and Neil Cummins counselor Ms. Morin will be facilitating the discussion. Make sure you pick up your copy of Right from Wrong soon so you have time to read it before February 3. It is available at Book Passage in Corte Madera. If you purchase your book at Book Passage and mention Hall Middle School, Book Passage will make a donation to the CML Schools Foundation. The book also makes a great gift for your friends with children. I am confident that it will generate a rich discussion. I invite all parents to join us in this unique way of providing parent education.

Winter Concert
This Thursday night is the Band Winter Concert at Hall. It is a great opportunity to hear the beginning and advanced bands, as well as the new Hall Choir. Fresh from their excellent prelude to the West Side Story production, the students and Mr. Brungess have been preparing for their next great performance. The Winter Concert will showcase the musical talent of our students and help you get into the holiday spirit. I hope to see you all in the gym at 7:30pm on Thursday night for this special event.
—Daniel Norbutas, Principal

Hall Middle School Music presents “Holiday Harmonies”
Thursday, Dec. 16, 7:30pm • Hall gym
The Hall Middle School Music Department offers its musical gift for the holidays on Thursday evening, December 16 at 7:30pm in the school gym (admission is free). Featured ensembles will be the Intermediate and Advanced Bands plus the “unwrapping” of the school’s shiny new Cougar Choir! The program promises to be a harmonious feast for any musical palate. “We’ll be performing traditional holiday fare along with folk songs, Broadway show tunes, choral madrigals, and some all-American jazz,” stated Kenneth Brungess, the program’s new music director. “I’m amazed and impressed by the students’ talent and creativity,” continued their conductor. “We’re going to have great fun playing music together this year!”

Making Change Work
Donations due Dec. 17
The campaign which started Sept. 11 will end on Dec. 21. The “Making Change Work” program is hoping to match or exceed last year’s total of $70,000 by expanding the campaign outside the boundaries of Marin County to schools in Sonoma and Alameda Counties. 100% of the money raised goes to rebuilding schools and playing fields in Afghanistan.

Hall Middle School will host a pizza party for the homeroom class that has collected the most donations for the program. If you have some loose change somewhere in your house, bring it in and put it in your homeroom’s collection container. Some students have asked if only pennies can be donated and the answer is that any money donations are welcome. Thank you to all the people who have contributed. Remember, every penny counts!
— Shelby McClure, Hall Middle School Representative
