No Name-Calling
While I agree that sticks and stones do
break bones, I’ve never subscribed to
the theory that names do not hurt. In
fact, being called a name can stay with
you your entire life. I can still recall
times in my life that I have been hurt
by the words of others. This week the
students and staff at Hall will be
participating in the National No Name-
Calling Week. Ms. Cohen, the school
counselor, will be working with
teachers and with students during
homeroom to discuss the negative
impact of name-calling. I encourage
families to discuss name-calling — how
it makes you feel when it happens to
you, ways to respond when you are
called a name, and more appropriate
ways to express yourself. This is also
a great opportunity to enforce a No
Name-Calling Week at home as well.
Ms. Cohen will be providing everyone
with more information and activities.
Math Solution
Several parents responded to last
week’s Mathletes question: The
sequence of 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11… consists of all positive
numbers which are not squares or cubes. What is the
200th term in this sequence?
This can be solved by beginning with
the assumption that a sequence of
200 terms starting at 2 would have an
ending term of 201. Then we need to
take out squares and cubes,
remembering to not take out 64 twice
(it is both a square of 8 and a cube of
4). This means we add 17 terms and
land on 218 as our answer.
Congratulations to parents Michael
Erickson, Alla Wood, and the
Schlichting Clan for their correct
responses. You are invited to
lunchtime ice cream on Thursday,
January 27. It was great to see so
many parents take a stab at the
answer – keep on trying. I hope the
problem sparked some great math
discussions at home.
