PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: June 6, 2005

A Strong Program
Along with the teachers who were honored at the Marin County Golden Bell Awards, Hall’s Physical Education program was awarded a Golden Bell. These program awards recognize departments or programs that have an impact on the lives and education of students. Mr. Johnston and Ms. Wollman have created a program that provides a diverse selection of activities that appeal to all students, not just a select few. Throughout the three years that students take physical education, they participate in a wide range of games and activities. Traditional games include basketball, volleyball, soccer, badminton, and flag football. One way in which this program is exemplary is the inclusion of games and activities which have historically not been part of physical education. These activities include Frisbee games, golf, table tennis, Salsa dancing, yoga, pickleball, Ringo, and STOMP! Each of these activities challenges students to do something new and different.

The physical education program also provides opportunities for students outside the classroom, offering a lunchtime Gymnastics Demonstration Team with over thirty students.

I am proud of the physical education program that has been created at Hall. Our students benefit from having such an engaging and rewarding program.

A Great Year
Awards assemblies, a graduation, brunch and dance are all happening this week. It is an exciting time, to say the least. When we get caught up in the planning and the excitement, it can be hard to step back and be reflective. When I do take a moment to think about the year, I am reminded about what a great year it was.

New teachers and students joined our community. A new, excited class of sixth graders joined us in the fall and a new eighth grade class stepped up to lead by example. New staff members have brought their insight and energy to the school. Ms. Ahle, Ms. Cornaggia, Ms. Poletti, Ms. Cohen, Mr. Brungess and Ms. Pasquale have all had a great year and have quickly become part of the Hall learning community.

Students had new opportunities for play and expression. This was our first year with the new field, blacktop and play structure. It’s easy to forget about the times when we had very little play space, now that we are blessed with great places to play. This year during lunch we experienced the creation of the knitting club, homeroom intramurals, jazz band, and choir.

Students were challenged and they performed. The Hall cross country, track and Mathletes teams all gave us something to cheer about. All three had successful seasons, with the Mathletes team finishing second in the county. We also saw the return of Odyssey of the Mind and the creation of a debate club at Hall.

Parents gave their time and energy. Through the generosity of our PTA and parent community, we had a successful Chalk Festival, sixth grade pumpkin carving, after school art class, and Earth Day activity. Our hot lunch program expanded to five days a week and provided students with more choice than ever before. Parents drove students to field trips to a synagogue, mosque, Chinatown, Point Reyes and Great America. Our new PTA president, Rebecca Sarokin, has done a great job coordinating parent support, supporting teachers and making Hall a great place to work and learn.

Students were supported. An after-school academic support program was offered this year, providing focused support to students. This was also the first year of our Learning Center, a place where all students in need of support receive it.

Students gave back. Our students donated more money, gathered more warm clothes, donated more canned food and served more community service than any other year.

All in all, I would have to say it was a pretty great year. I would like to thank all of the students, teachers and parents who have helped to make it so successful. I hope you all have a relaxing and rewarding summer. I look forward to seeing what next year has in store for us.

Grades and Bills
Students who have outstanding bills for books or locks, or have overdue library books will have their report cards withheld until the bills are paid or books returned. Report cards will be mailed on June 17. If you have any outstanding fees you will be mailed a letter detailing missing materials instead of a report card. Make sure all materials are returned this week to avoid any delay in receiving your child’s report card. The office will be open from 9-4 until June 21.

Scheduling for Next Year
We are in the process of building the master schedule for next year. Sixth and seventh grade parents please contact the office as soon as possible if your child will not be returning to Hall next year. This information will help us build balanced classrooms. Thank you for your cooperation.

Next Year Particulars
The first day of school will be Monday, August 29th. You can pick up your child’s schedule, purchase a Binder Reminder and PE uniform the day before, on Friday, August 26th.

The office will be open August 22 if you have any questions or concerns. I will also be available through the end of June if you need to get in contact with me.
