MESSAGE: Sept. 12,
2005 |
Back to School Night Change
This year Back to School Night will begin at 6:30pm on
Thursday, September 15. At 6:30pm we will have a general session
for all parents in the gym. After the general session, parents
will follow their child’s schedule from 7:00 to 8:30pm. Each
teacher will do a twelve minute presentation on the curriculum
and expectations for their class. This evening is an opportunity
for you to experience your child’s school day – albeit
in a reduced format without homework. Your child will bring their
schedule home to you on Wednesday, September 14.
This evening is for the parents at Hall. Therefore, we ask that
you leave your children at home to work on their homework. While
you will have an opportunity to meet each teacher, this evening
is not a time for parent conferences. If you would like to schedule
a time to talk with a teacher, you can contact them by voicemail
and arrange a time at a later date. Additional parking is available
at Piper Park.
Katrina Relief
Hall students and staff are actively
working on coordinating fundraisers for those affected by the hurricane.
School counselor, Molly Cohen is working with students to organize
school-wide activities. She is also working with Neil Cummins staff
to coordinate a district-wide event this month. Please feel free
to contact her at mcohen@marin.k12.ca.us if
you have time and energy to offer. I am impressed with the creativity
and compassion of many Hall students who have approached me with
great ideas for helping those in need.
Hands-On Solution
When two Hall eighth graders approached me last week, complaining
that the bench they sit on at lunch was giving them splinters, one
might have expected them to then say, “And what are you going
to do about it?” Instead,
these two young ladies said that they would love to paint it themselves.
I informed them that would also mean sanding it down by hand to
reduce the splinters, and they responded, “Can we start today?” So
last week these two spent one lunch period sanding a bench and
another lunch period painting it. They approached each task with
enthusiasm and pride. Given how often the media likes to talk about
all the things that kids today don’t do, I thought it would
be nice to share an example of two students who chose to do more.
Thank you, Alana and Gigi, for more than just the bench.
