Figuring Reconfiguration
The process and impact of moving the fifth grade class to Hall
is bigger than simply transplanting a handful of classrooms. As
the district-sponsored planning meetings have revealed, the reconfiguration
of the Larkspur District is a complex issue. Our superintendent
has begun the process in the best possible way – by involving
all of the constituencies who are affected. Community-wide planning
sessions have included parents, teachers, classified staff and
administration from both schools. The long list of issues and questions
has been divided into key topic areas, each with their own committees.
The reconfiguration process presents great opportunities for Hall
Middle School. The process of including fifth grade into our school
program provides an opportunity for us to investigate and define
our core values. Throughout the process we will be constantly asking
ourselves the question, “What is good for kids?” This
year we will be asking ourselves and you that question a lot. And
that is a good thing.
This process will also bring us closer together with our colleagues
at Neil Cummins. I know we have a lot we can learn from the best
practices at our elementary school that will improve the educational
program for all of the students at Hall.
Sometimes when we look at the list of tasks and questions involved
in this reconfiguration, it can feel overwhelming. Fortunately,
we have the strength of our superintendent, the voice of our parents,
and the insight of our teachers. Armed with all of these, the process
begins to feel more like an opportunity than a challenge.
I encourage you to become involved in the process, even if you
won’t have a fifth grader at grader at Hall next year.
As we can see, the scope of this activity is larger than any single
grade.
