Halloween
Halloween presents unique challenges to middle schools.
Our desire to teach can often find itself in opposition to our students’ holiday
energy. This year we have allowed students to express that energy
by dressing up today. A list of guidelines went home last week in
backpack mail. Additionally, the day after Halloween poses a set
of challenges. We often find students in an altered state of sleep
deprivation and sugar overdose. At the risk of sounding like the
Halloween Grinch, when planning your child’s Halloween activities
and bed time, remember that tomorrow is a school day. Adequate sleep
and breakfast are essential elements of school success. Also, please
limit the amount of candy that travels with your child to school
in the days following Halloween. Tootsie Rolls at snack time and
Skittles for lunch add up to a challenging day for everyone. Your
child’s teachers and I thank you for your cooperation.
End of the Quarter
Last Friday marked the end of the first quarter of the year. Starting today
sixth grade students will begin the second of their four enrichment classes.
Grade reports will be handed out to students after school on Friday, November
4. On that report card students will receive a grade and a citizenship mark.
As your child moves through middle school, our hope and expectation is that
they take an increasingly active role in their own education. Different students
accept this increased responsibility at different rates. Ideally, questions
about assignments and grades should be handled by students first. If this
is not possible and you have any questions or concerns about your child’s
grade in a particular class, contact that teacher directly. All teachers
have voicemail and email. If you are concerned about your child’s performance
across all subjects, contact the school counselor, Molly Cohen.
Academic Inactivity
At the end of each quarter, students who do not meet minimum academic requirements
are placed on the Academic Inactivity List. Students on this list will not
be permitted to attend school dances or hold Student Council Cabinet positions
until the end of the next quarter. In order to be academically eligible,
students must have above a 2.0 (“C” average) grade point average,
and not have an “F” in any class.
Academic Inactivity will take effect on November 4, the day report
cards are handed out. Students who are on the Inactivity List will
not be permitted to attend the school dance that evening.
