MESSAGE: Mar. 3, 2006 |
STAR Writing Test Tomorrow
Tomorrow, March 7, all of the seventh grade students across California
will be taking the Direct Write portion of the STAR test. These
tests will be administered by their teacher during their Language
Arts/Social Studies core. Students do not need to do anything
special to prepare for the test, except to have a good night’s
sleep and a healthy breakfast. Please help your child to do their
best by starting their day off on the right foot. Thank you.
8th Grade Parent Information Night at Redwood
This Thursday at 6:00pm is the Parent Information Night at Redwood
High School for current eighth grade parents. The event will
be held in the gym and is for parents only. You will receive
valuable information about registration, academics, athletics
and support services at Redwood. I encourage all parents of eighth
graders to attend this valuable meeting.
Progress Reports
Progress reports serve as the school’s “early warning
system” for students who are in danger of failing a class.
Teachers identify students who are earning a C- or below at the
mid-point of the semester and we mail progress reports to their
families. These reports were mailed last Friday. If one was sent
to your child, you should have received it by today. If you did
receive one, please sign it and have your child return it to the
office. We require your signature so we can be sure that you saw
it. If you have any questions about whether or not your child was
sent a progress report, please contact the office.
Mathletes Challenge
Here is your second-to-last chance to use your math skills to earn
a trip to Baskin Robbins. The most recent county Mathletes competition
saw each of the Hall teams continue to excel. With only one more
competition remaining, the eighth-grade team is still in contention
for the county title!
The following problems come from the last
competition and will test your math skills. These are a great
opportunity for a discussion, so I hope families take a moment
to solve them together. The second problem is the “bonus” question
for those who would like an additional challenge. All correct
responses will be eligible for a drawing to determine ice cream
recipients. Enjoy:
To amuse herself while waiting in line, Lupe is flipping a
coin and noting the outcome. On the first four flips of the coin
she got “heads” each time. She is about to flip the coin
for the fifth time. What is the probability that she will get “heads” on
the next flip?
Bonus Problem
What is the measure of the obtuse angle formed by the hands of
a clock at 9:24?
