MESSAGE: Mar. 27, 2006 |
Another Voice
While you are all veteran parents, I am still in
the early years of parenthood. My two and a half year old provides
a new challenge and joy every day. Sometimes I think he teaches
me more than I teach him. My most recent observation has to do
with following instructions. Lately, I have noticed that there
are times my son takes direction and suggestions better from a
talking toy car than he does from me. At the dinner table my request
that he eat more broccoli can go unheeded at times. But when the
talking toy car that we are playing with mentions how great it
would be to eat some broccoli, suddenly it is the greatest idea
in the world, and he enthusiastically consumes it all. I used the
same words as the race car. I, in fact, was the voice of the race
car! So why did the toy car succeed where I had failed?
These are the questions that make parenthood, and
education, so great. I may never have pondered the “Toy Car
Effect” if I did not have a child of my own. I’m sure
there are a great many explanations of why a voice other than the
parent’s can sometimes elicit
a desired response more than the parent’s voice itself. I
won’t bore you with my corollary theory on the “Charlie
Brown Parent Voice Pattern” – that is a theory for
another time.
Suffice to say that the lesson I took away from this
experience is that we need to use the “Toy Car Effect” to
the benefit of our children. As a learning community working together,
we need to use all of our voices to help our children make good
choices. The aunt, uncle, family friend or teacher can have considerable
positive influence on the little ones in our lives. It does not
mean that we as parents have failed or that our voices are being
lost. It simply means that our messages can sometimes get lost
in the daily routine. I hereby authorize all parents to use me
and my voice to whatever extent it may help provide another voice.
Oftentimes parent and principal sound the same to our children,
so the impact may not be as powerful as something with four wheels.
But know that the educators at this school work very hard to be
another voice that helps move your children in the right direction.
