PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: September 18 , 2006

Almost as Much Fun as Recess

Mr. Boone and I spent some time in fifth and sixth grade classrooms last week. We conducted “check-in chats” with our new students. We asked them what they like about their first couple of weeks at Hall and what they would like to change. We each had a great time in the classes we visited – our students are expressive, inquisitive and insightful. We were very pleased with the feedback we received. We heard from our students that they especially like their teachers, the library, playground, field, after school programs, computers, and lunch options. One student shared, “Classes are almost as fun as recess.”  Some of the areas for improvement were the number of kids on the bus, eating at the end of lunch, and expanding the play structure. We will continue to check in with our new students and sit down with our returning students throughout the year to hear how things are going and get ideas on how to improve the school.

Basketball Game

Another thing that the students said they liked was the Students vs. Staff Basketball game we held the week before last. The gym was packed with enthusiastic students. The students were represented by a sixth grade squad with equal parts basketball skill and heart. The staff fielded a strong team as well, with teachers from every grade level. We had nearly twenty staff strapping it up for the lunchtime game.

The game was free of broken bones and hernias – qualities we always look for in this event. It was a great time that both the adults and the students enjoyed immensely. In the end, the staff managed to eek out a two point win, as a buzzer-beating three pointer by the students just missed its mark.  This game is part of the Foundation’s Spring Auction. It is a live auction item that we look forward to every year. This spring it will be up for auction again, and we will hold the game in late May or early June.
