Student Safety at Hall
Student safety is a top priority at Hall. Feeling safe at school is a necessary component to learning – students learn best only when they feel safe. To facilitate safety at school, we organize our supervision schedules to maximize coverage on campus and we reinforce behavioral expectations across classrooms, grade-levels and school-wide. When we ask our students, we hear that the vast majority do feel safe at school. In last year’s Site Council Student Survey, 90% of Hall students reported that they felt safe at school.
But this is not the entire picture.
In the same Site Council Student Survey, only 55% of students reported that students treat each other with respect. As evidenced by the recent bullying incident on campus, there is still more work to be done.
To address bullying and other inappropriate behavior, Mr. Boone, Ms. Yasuda and I visited all seventh and eighth grade homerooms last week and discussed student behavior.
We talked about the Hall community and the need to respect other students in both their language and their actions. We also stressed the obligation of all students to speak up or find help if they see or hear about someone being mistreated in any way. We will continue these discussions this week when we visit fifth and sixth grade classes, as well.
We will also be addressing behavior on a school-wide level with our implementation of a new character education program, Character Counts! This program is a nationally-recognized character education program that teaches the six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. The entire staff was trained in Character Counts! at our last staff development day in October. This January we will be rolling out our classroom activities that focus on a different pillar each month. Our goal is to make these pillars a central part of how students interact with other students and with staff. We anticipate bringing parent participation into this process through the PTA and parent education nights. We appreciate the ongoing support of parents, students and staff in making Hall an excellent place to learn.
Odyssey Parents Needed!
We still need parents to help with our award-winning Odyssey of the Mind program. Please contact me if you can give an afternoon a week to this valuable program.
