PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: December 11, 2006

BATS

In the remote village of Humperdink, the town’s people boast about Count Dracula's famous castle, but everyone really knows that vampires, werewolves and mummies do not exist anymore…or do they?
Last Friday and Saturday nights, a cast of our finest showcased their thespian and musical talents in an electrifying, amusing, and quite lovable rendition of Simon Denver and Ian Dorricott’s BATS the musical.

Clever and skilled actors, supported by masterful performances from select Hall musicians, stole the stage before sell-out crowds both Friday and Saturday nights. The performance reminded me why the Arts are an essential part of public education.

Pablo Picasso stated, "Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life."  Plato declared, "I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for in the patterns of music and all the arts are the keys of learning."

The Arts provide our children with a unique means of expression.  It allows them to capture their passions and explore new ideas.  The Arts create a stage, a canvas…an opportunity for students to discover who they are and much more.  Henry Miller stated, "Art teaches nothing, except the significance of life."

I would like to extend a warm thank you to our extraordinary students, Lori Glass, Linda Sudduth, Amy Fredericks, Bruce Amos, Jeff Derby, the Hall PTA and the Corte Madera Larkspur Foundation whose time and dedication made this memorable event possible.

Canned Food Drive

I am pleased to announce that through the leadership of our Student Council and ongoing efforts of our students and families, we were able to compile 2934 pounds of canned goods for the Marin Community Food Bank.  That translates to one and half tons of food!  Our efforts will help feed families in need throughout this Holiday season.  Thank you for your participation.

Adopt-a-Family

The Adopt-a-Family program drew to a close last Thursday and was a huge success.  This year we again worked with our partners from Ritter House and adopted six families.  Each homeroom was responsible for reviewing the “wish list” written by individual family members. Purchased gifts will be delivered to families unwrapped.  We are thankful that we can again find ways to help people who are in need.  I would like to extend special thanks to the Student Council and advisors Norma Shaner and Art Nelson.

Halloween UNICEF Fundraiser

Congratulations to our students who participated in the Halloween UNICEF fundraiser.  We raised about $250 for UNICEF.  I would like to acknowledge student Henry T. who felt very strongly about the UNICEF cause. Henry donated about $80 of his own money earned through babysitting. Henry, your act of generosity and giving is a model to us all.

SCHOOL NEWS

Cartridges for Kids

Just a reminder! The Library raises money (books cost a lot these days) by recycling your old printer cartridges. Send in those empty ink jet and laser cartridges, and we will do the rest. Old cell phones can be recycled as well. Thanks!
