Hoop Dreams
In 1979 I scored a basket for my junior high school basketball team. The memory is still vivid in my mind. I remember the basketball court in the cafeteria and our stunning green uniforms. I still remember the spot on the baseline where I let my shot fly and how I felt when it went through the basket. Some of you will not be surprised to learn that it was the only basket I ever scored in junior high school. I don’t remember that those two points had an impact on the season or the game, but playing on that team did have an impact on me. I spent the majority of my youth playing on a variety of sports teams. Even if I wasn’t particularly gifted at the sport, I loved being part of a team and working together. I often worry that the increasingly competitive nature of youth sports today creates a situation where children stop playing sports at a younger age. I have always felt that children should participate in a variety of sports for as long as possible. In my humble opinion, eleven years old is too young to decide you can’t do something. If my junior high school team was not open to all students, I would not have ever scored that basket. More importantly, I would not have ever met my teammates, worked with my coach and learned all the valuable lessons team sports can teach.

All of these thoughts ran through my mind as I watched the Hall Middle School sixth grade basketball team compete in their first game of the season. It was great to see our kids trading baskets with the kids from Miller Creek. Our coach, PE teacher Mr. Silva has done a great job working with our squad and Mr. Fester (8th grade social studies) ran the scoreboard flawlessly. Congratulations to Pierre, Briton, Jack, Jack, Timmy, Regan, Douglass, Henry, Andrew, and Zach for representing Hall on the court. A huge thanks also to Laurie Dubin for her tireless effort in putting the team together. This team would not exist without her work at the school and county level. Hall has not fielded a basketball team in several years, so it was wonderful to see the boys in blue running the floor again. I hope that this team and this season will spark the growth of our basketball program. We will always endeavor to support a range of student abilities in our athletic program so that our children can participate in a variety of sports for as long as possible.

After School Opportunities
Speaking of being involved in a variety of activities, a flyer went home before the break that outlined the After School Program at Hall that is being organized by Larkspur Recreation Department. You can sign your child up for archery, jazz dance, fencing, rocketry, gymnastics, woodworking, knitting, golf, gaming, wrestling, art, jewelry design, babysitting training or the after school “lounge”. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to enjoy fun activities on campus directly after school. These classes will only continue to be offered if students sign up for them. Some classes start soon, so sign up now! I know I will be making appearances at the gaming class put on by staff at Gamescape.

You can sign up for a class online at the recreation link at www.ci.larkspur.ca.us or by calling 927-6747.

Odyssey of the Mind
Hall Middle School is looking to form an Odyssey of the Mind team for the 2007 season.  We are interested in bright, young students who exude creativity!  Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college.  Kids apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics.  They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and world level.  Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.  If you think your child would be an asset to our team, please email me at aahle@marin.k12.ca.us.
I can also be reached by phone at 927-6978 ext. 2215.  We look forward to working with your child!
