School Safety
This week I wanted to update you on our ongoing school safety efforts and remind you about a few important procedures that we have in place. Disaster preparedness is a critical component of school safety. Please know that our facilities, school disaster plans, and competent staff will keep your child safe during an emergency.

Larkspur School District Health and Safety Committee
As a part of the District’s ongoing efforts to improve school safety, the Health and Safety committee was formed during early November. We held our first meeting November 15. The purpose of the committee is to identify the needs of our program, review best practices and make programmatic change recommendations to the District Advisory Committee. Participation on the committee is open to the community. In you are interested and would like to get involved, please contact Andy Boone at aboone@marin.k12.ca.us.

Safety Plan
We have updated our disaster plan and procedures to reflect new structures, as well as accommodate our new 5th grade students and faculty.  We are working with Mr. Carvey and his team to better align our Hall and Neil Cummins safety programs.

During January, every teacher and staff member received a new emergency backpack and supplies.  A special thanks to parent and committee member Susie Nichols for her ongoing dedication to school safety

Monthly Drills
We have successfully held monthly drills to better prepare our students for any emergency.  Our expectation is a safe and silent evacuation under two minutes. Just last week we set a new record: a safe and silent school-wide evacuation in just 1 minute 56 seconds. Our next fire drill is scheduled for February 15 at 2:40pm. The next earthquake drill is scheduled for March 22 at 11:55am.

During an Earthquake
Please know that teachers will immediately command “DROP”.  Students and staff will remain under desks, or in appropriate locations, until after the shaking ceases.  When the quaking has stopped, students will be dismissed to safe predetermined areas outside the buildings.  They will remain outside until buildings are judged safe for re-entry. In the event of a major earthquake, school will not be dismissed. Children will remain under the supervision of school authorities.

Telephone/Communications
It is likely that a major disaster will seriously curtail telephone service.  If telephones should be operational following a disaster, their use must be restricted to reporting medical, fire, or other emergencies.  PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL.  We will provide information for parents to be released by radio on KCBS 740 AM and KGO 810 AM; Corte Madera Emergency Broadcast Radio, 1330 AM; or by television on KTVU channel 2 and KPIX, channel 5.  Parents may phone the Larkspur School District Disaster Hotline at 530-895-7688. To the extent possible, the District will use this message service to leave updated messages about he condition of Hall and Neil Cummins.

Picking Up Your Child
In the unlikely event of a general student release, children will be released according to information listed on the emergency card.  Please take note of the following:

  1. Park away from the school’s main entrance to allow maximum access for emergency vehicles.

  2. Parents or a designated adult will report to the Student Evacuation Area located on the blacktop.

  3. Parents or a designated adult will sign the student out on a Student Release form.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Daniel or me.  Have a terrific week.
