PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: September 2, 2003

We had a wonderful opening of school last week. The first day of school was Wednesday, August 27. Students and staff came to school excited about the new year. Students eagerly reconnected with familiar friends and teachers before the first bell. Throughout the day they also met their new classmates and teachers. All told, on the first day 132 eighth graders, 88 seventh graders and 120 sixth graders made their way through the school.

Hall is fortunate to have four new staff members this year. Carin Wethington and Carolyn Pruden have joined the eighth grade team. Carin comes to us from Tamalpais High School and teaches Algebra. Carolyn taught at Mill Valley Middle School last year and will be teaching eighth grade Language Arts. Mary Fagan is our new sixth grade Math/Science teacher. She previously taught at Sacred Heart in San Francisco. Cookie Morin is the new district counselor. She will be at Hall on Thursday and Fridays. Cookie has extensive middle school experience, most recently at Miller Creek.

Seventh and eighth grade class meetings were held the first week of school. At those meetings the teachers and I talked to the students about high academic and behavioral expectations and discussed responsibility and respect. Sixth grade discussions took place within each of the classrooms.

Construction work on the front of campus was completed in time for the start of school. The school is looking great after all of the work that has been done. It has been a long road, but the end result is definitely worth the effort.

Remember when dropping off or picking up your student to use the drop-off area on the west side of the campus. Enter at the school entrance (not the district office) and then turn left and proceed to the circle to pick up or drop off your student.

It has been a great start to what will be a great year. I have enjoyed meeting the staff, students and their families. Please come by and introduce yourself if you haven’t done so already, or call to schedule a brief meeting. I look forward to eventually getting to know the entire community.

—Daniel Norbutas, Principal

HALL SCHOOL NEWS: Events

BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT
Thursday, Sep. 11 • 7:00pm

Put Thursday Sept. 11 on your calendar for our Back-To-School night, 7pm. There will be early dismissal that day at 1:05pm, so the teachers will have time to get ready. There will also be a short PTA General Membership meeting immediately following the Back-to-School activities, to vote on the budget mainly.

BYE, BYE, BIRDIE!

Bye Bye BirdieOur Hall musical comedy, Bye Bye Birdie, will be presented in the Fall this year, so it is starting right away, with workshops this week (9/3 & 9/5, 3:15-5pm) and auditions next week (9/10 & 9/12, 3:30-5:30pm). Though rehearsals were planned to be on Wednesdays (for major characters to rehearsal scenes and solos) and Fridays (for the full cast), we’ve heard from several kids that those days don’t work for them. So we’re taking a very quick survey — If your student would like to be in the play, which days after school (3:30-5:30pm) work for them? The four performances will be the weekend before Thanksgiving. Contact Becky Reed with your scheduling needs. The final decision on rehearsal days will be announced in next week’s Bulletin.

Detailed information is coming home in backpack mail today. All students are encouraged to join, and every Hall student who auditions is in the play — there will be no cuts. The fee is $65 per student, which includes cost of snacks and cast party, with scholarships available. All major roles will be double cast. Former Hall parent Becky Reed is the director, and we need lots of parents to volunteer, especially a producer to coordinate all aspects of the show. To sign up, contact Becky Reed.

HALL SCHOOL NEWS: Information

STUDENT COUNCIL
—From Mr. Nelson & Mrs. Muserilli

Mr. Nelson and Mrs. Muserilli are ready to get Student Council up and running. 7th and 8th grade students interested in running for student council cabinet should meet in Mrs. Muserilli’s room at lunch on Tuesday Sep. 9 to receive a petition. Campaigning will occur from Sept. 15–19, and candidates’ speeches and elections will take place on Sep. 26. Students in all grades should also consider serving as a homeroom representative. Students who participate in Student Council must be willing and able to attend 7:45am meetings each Tuesday morning.

YEARBOOKS
Deadline: Oct. 15

2003-2004 yearbooks will be on sale from Sep. 15–Oct. 15 for an early bird special price of $30. Students received order forms in homeroom. The order form and check should be returned to the office.

LUNCH PROGRAM
Look for signups/order sheet soon

Lunch Program The PTA would again like to sponsor a lunch program provided by TJs, a catering company that has been providing nutritious meals for many schools here in Marin County. Here at HMS we offer pasta dishes every Monday and Mexican dishes every Tuesday. Each entrée is served with a fresh vegetable, fruit and milk. Along with giving your children nutritious meals, you will be supporting the main fundraising event of your PTA (which sponsors many valuable programs for our school). We hope to start serving the lunches on Sept. 22 so look for order sheets in the backpack mail. The PTA also hopes to sell Jamba Juice drinks on Wednesdays and would like offer pizza one day during the week. More information will be forthcoming when those options become available. Thanks for your support and if you have any comments or questions, please contact Kathie Cummins.
