PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: September 8, 2003

Back-to-School Night is this Thursday, September 11 from 7:00 to 8:30pm with a special 6:45 start for 0-period band parents. You will learn about grade level programs, course expectations and content standards. Starting at 7:00pm you will follow your child’s schedule, moving from class to class and hearing from their teachers. Your child will bring home a copy of their schedule on Wednesday the 10th so you will know where to go. Remember that there will not be time Thursday night for individual conferences, but you may be able to schedule a meeting with individual teachers at a later date.

At 6:30pm in room 504 Eliott Rodgers will be holding an informational meeting about this year’s Washington D.C. trip for eighth graders.

Last week three Hall students approached me before school and asked what it was like being a principal. The question surprised and impressed me. It reflected how open and friendly the Hall students have been towards me. It also revealed something deeper. During the second week of school, with their lives undergoing its annual transformation, these students were interested in the experience of someone else — a unique and impressive quality.

Their curiosity and interest in me reminded me of the importance to think outside of ourselves and consider the experiences of others. As we begin a new school year it is a great time to reconnect with your children and their new experiences. Sometimes when we get caught up in managing the details of our children’s lives — pick-up and drop-off schedules — we can lose sight of the experiences our children are having. They are getting to know their new teachers, adapting to new expectations and procedures, and making new connections with other students. Even our returning seventh and eighth graders encounter a different school when they return each year.

This Back-to-School Night is an opportunity to experience in a small way the daily pattern of your child. While you make connections with teachers and learn about course content and expectations, make sure to also appreciate each of these from your child’s perspective. With as many as six different classrooms and teachers, each with their own requirements, the school day is very different than the average day at work. This night will allow you to meet the variety of adults who work with your child every day and to gain more insight into the lives of your children.

To answer the question of the students who approached me, I asked them what they thought my job was like. They said they thought it would be hard — especially with having to keep kids in line. I told them, “With kids like you, it’s easy.”

—Daniel Norbutas, Principal

HALL SCHOOL NEWS: Events

BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT
Thursday, Sep. 11 • 7:00pm

Put Thursday Sept. 11 on your calendar for our Back-To-School night, 7pm. There will be early dismissal that day at 1:05pm, so the teachers will have time to get ready. There will also be a short PTA General Membership meeting immediately following the Back-to-School activities, mainly to vote on the budget.

8th GRADE BOOK CLUB
Wednesday, Oct. 15 • 7:00pm

Our next meeting for the 8th grade book club will be on Wednesday, October 15 at 7:00pm at the home of Molly Berkemeier and Lori Lerner.  We will be discussing the book, Losing Forever by Gail Friesen.  Please RSVP BEFORE the meeting by calling us!  HAPPY READING!!!

BYE, BYE, BIRDIE!

Bye Bye BirdieOur Hall musical comedy, Bye Bye Birdie, will be presented in the Fall this year, so it is starting right away, with workshops this week (9/3 & 9/5, 3:15-5pm) and auditions next week (9/10 & 9/12, 3:30-5:30pm). Though rehearsals were planned to be on Wednesdays (for major characters to rehearsal scenes and solos) and Fridays (for the full cast), we’ve heard from several kids that those days don’t work for them. So we’re taking a very quick survey — If your student would like to be in the play, which days after school (3:30-5:30pm) work for them? The four performances will be the weekend before Thanksgiving. Contact Becky Reed with your scheduling needs. The final decision on rehearsal days will be announced in next week’s Bulletin.

Detailed information is coming home in backpack mail today. All students are encouraged to join, and every Hall student who auditions is in the play — there will be no cuts. The fee is $65 per student, which includes cost of snacks and cast party, with scholarships available. All major roles will be double cast. Former Hall parent Becky Reed is the director, and we need lots of parents to volunteer, especially a producer to coordinate all aspects of the show. To sign up, contact Becky Reed.

LUNCH PROGRAM
Look for signups/order sheet soon

Lunch Program The PTA would again like to sponsor a lunch program provided by TJs, a catering company that has been providing nutritious meals for many schools here in Marin County. Here at HMS we offer pasta dishes every Monday and Mexican dishes every Tuesday. Each entrée is served with a fresh vegetable, fruit and milk. Along with giving your children nutritious meals, you will be supporting the main fundraising event of your PTA (which sponsors many valuable programs for our school). We hope to start serving the lunches on Sept. 22 so look for order sheets in the backpack mail. The PTA also hopes to sell Jamba Juice drinks on Wednesdays and would like offer pizza one day during the week. More information will be forthcoming when those options become available. Thanks for your support and if you have any comments or questions, please contact Kathie Cummins.
