MESSAGE: September 8, 2003 |
Back-to-School Night is this Thursday, September 11 from 7:00 to
8:30pm with a special 6:45 start for 0-period band parents. You
will learn about grade level programs, course expectations and content
standards. Starting at 7:00pm you will follow your child’s
schedule, moving from class to class and hearing from their teachers.
Your child will bring home a copy of their schedule on Wednesday
the 10th so you will know where to go. Remember that there will
not be time Thursday night for individual conferences, but you may
be able to schedule a meeting with individual teachers at a later
date.
At 6:30pm in room 504 Eliott Rodgers will be holding an informational
meeting about this year’s Washington D.C. trip for eighth
graders.
Last week three Hall students approached me before school and asked
what it was like being a principal. The question surprised and impressed
me. It reflected how open and friendly the Hall students have been
towards me. It also revealed something deeper. During the second
week of school, with their lives undergoing its annual transformation,
these students were interested in the experience of someone else
— a unique and impressive quality.
Their curiosity and interest in me reminded me of the importance
to think outside of ourselves and consider the experiences of others.
As we begin a new school year it is a great time to reconnect with
your children and their new experiences. Sometimes when we get caught
up in managing the details of our children’s lives —
pick-up and drop-off schedules — we can lose sight of the
experiences our children are having. They are getting to know their
new teachers, adapting to new expectations and procedures, and making
new connections with other students. Even our returning seventh
and eighth graders encounter a different school when they return
each year.
This Back-to-School Night is an opportunity to experience in a
small way the daily pattern of your child. While you make connections
with teachers and learn about course content and expectations, make
sure to also appreciate each of these from your child’s perspective.
With as many as six different classrooms and teachers, each with
their own requirements, the school day is very different than the
average day at work. This night will allow you to meet the variety
of adults who work with your child every day and to gain more insight
into the lives of your children.
To answer the question of the students who approached me, I asked
them what they thought my job was like. They said they thought it
would be hard — especially with having to keep kids in line.
I told them, “With kids like you, it’s easy.”
