Parents Came Back to School
Last week’s Back to School Night was a great success. Parents
met their child’s teachers and learned about course content
and expectations. If you were not able to attend and would like
information, please contact your child’s teachers.
Parent for Site Council
Two parents are needed to serve on the Hall
Site Council. The Site Council is the decision-making body of
the school and is responsible for school policy and allocating site
funds. It is comprised of parents, students, teachers, classified
staff and myself. We will meet once a month in the afternoon. If
you are interested in serving on the Site Council this year, please
contact me by phone (927-6978) or by email (dnorbutas@marin.k12.ca.us).
Additional Support for Sixth Graders
The sixth grade team has created an academic support opportunity
for sixth
grade students. Sixth-grade Math/Science teacher Mary Fagan
will be teaching an
enrichment class called Learning Power for small groups of students.
The class
will focus on helping students learn and practice the skills they
need for
success in the classroom. Students will work on a variety of skills
including
maintaining their notebook, organizing assignments, actively reading
and
preparing for tests. The class is designed to review, enhance, and
complement
the work that students are doing in their core classes. Special
emphasis will
be given to the work being done in their math and language arts
classes.
Sixth-grade teachers will identify students who they believe would
benefit from
this program and will contact the families. If you have any questions
about
this program, please call Mary Fagan or me.
Eighth Grade Class Photo
The eighth grade class photo will be taken on Friday, September
19. Individual
student photos are scheduled for October 17.
Employment Opportunities
Hall is looking for an instructional aide for 3.75 hours per day
as well as a
yard supervisor one hour a day. Call Becky White at the district
office (927-
6960 x3206) for further details on either of these positions.
On Homework and Marathons
This is the point in the year when the adrenaline from the start
of the year
has worn off and students begin to settle into daily patterns. The
challenge
for them now is to maintain the pace they have set. It is the time
at which
your children are reminded that the school year is a marathon, not
a sprint.
The goal for students now is to maintain steady effort all year,
rather than
working in bursts, thus falling behind and constantly struggling
to sprint to
catch up. This is a good time for you and your child to establish
effective
homework patterns at home, especially with regard to the time and
place they do
their work so that they can maintain consistent effort.
Whenever possible, students should have specific time set aside
in the evening
to do homework. As children become increasingly involved in afternoon
and
evening activities, it is important to have time set aside each
night. Some
students appreciate having scheduled, structured time in the evening
for
homework.
Students should also have an appropriate place to work. A desk
or table, free
from distractions like music and television, will help students
focus and be
more efficient with their time. Never underestimate the value of
working at the
dining room table. It provides a good, hard surface, good lighting,
is quiet
and allows you to be accessible for help and to be aware of your
child ’s
progress (or lack thereof).
By establishing effective habits now, your child will be prepared
for the path
ahead of them in the marathon that is school.
