PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: September 22, 2003

Student Council Elections
While California is in the midst of its own election frenzy, Hall Middle School Student Council elections began with a bang last Monday. While the candidate list is shorter than the ballot for governor, it is still an impressive list, with over twenty students running for office. The campaigns kicked off on Monday with a flurry of posters and stickers. Gray and Arnold could learn a thing or two from the Hall students about running a campaign. Candidates have been placing colorful posters around campus, all with an eye to capturing the interest of students passing by. The care, thought, and creativity that went into each one is impressive. Campaign stickers have become the hot collectors’ item among students.

During the Election Assembly this Friday, candidates will be giving their speeches to the student body, and then students will be voting. Student Council teachers Nicole Muserilli and Art Nelson will be providing speech workshops and support for all candidates this week in preparation for the assembly.

Change to Skateboard and Rollerblade Policy
Working with students, staff, and parents, I have spent the last several weeks examining and discussing Hall’s policies regarding skateboards and rollerblades. Historically, skateboards and rollerblades have not been permitted. I drafted a policy revision that has been approved by the staff and the PTA Executive Board. The new policy, which is included in Backpack Mail, permits students to ride skateboards or rollerblades to school provided they satisfy specific requirements. See the parent permission form for more information. If you wish to allow your child to skateboard or rollerblade to school, please read and sign the permission form. Students will lose the privilege of riding to school if they do not satisfy all of the requirements.

Bridge Club at Lunch
The Hall Bridge Club will begin meeting at lunch this Wednesday, September 24, in Ms. Wolfe’s room (508). All students interested are encouraged to participate and learn the intricacies of bridge.

Remarkable Achievements
Congratulations to students who made Principal’s List or Honor Roll based on last quarter’s grades. Principal’s List students earned a 4.0 GPA, and Honor Roll students earned between a 3.5 and 3.99 GPA. These students are to be commended for their impressive accomplishments.

—Daniel Norbutas, Principal

HALL SCHOOL NEWS: Information

COMMUNITY SERVICE

The beginning of the year is a great time to start thinking about community service. Those of us who volunteer our time and talents know the satisfaction this brings. Many of us wish we could do more. Let’s share the spirit of community with our children by encouraging them to get involved with an activity or organization that benefits others. Please check backpack mail from Sep. 22 for an informational flier detailing the Hall program.

Community Service at the Hall Chalk Festival
Those champion Hall students interested in participating in this fun event, and accruing hours towards your community service to boot, please sign up on the list displayed on the bulletin board in the Hall office! We need help selling pizza, setting-up tables, hanging decorations, taping squares on the black-top for our chalk drawing artists, and much, much more!
—If you can help, please contact Anne Doyle or Patty Fitch

MATHLETES!
Tuesdays, starting Oct. 7 • 3:15–4:00pm

Mathletes is a bit like after-school sports for mathematicians. Four times a year Hall mathletes meet with other schools for county-wide mathematics competitions at San Jose Middle School in Novato. Competition dates for this year are the following Tuesdays: November 18, January 13, February 24, and March 16. At Hall we have both a 7th grade team and an 8th grade team. The teams will practice on Tuesdays from 3:15–4:00pm in Mr. Pankler’s room. The first practice is October 7. All students are invited to participate. Sixth-grade students looking for a challenge may also attend the practices.

Mathletes Coach Needed: While Mr. Pankler serves as the Teacher Advisor for the Mathletes teams, we seek volunteers from the community to serve as coaches. Last year Larry Reed did a marvelous job as coach. Anyone interested should contact Mr. Pankler. There is a meeting for coaches on Tuesday, September 30, at the Marin County Office of Education.
