PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: September 29, 2003

Election Update
Student Council elections came to a close on Friday with a wonderful Election Assembly. Candidates gave their speeches and then students voted for their favorite candidates. All of the candidates are to be commended for running great campaigns and giving effective speeches at the assembly.

Congratulations to all of the students who devoted their time and energy to running for office, and a big thanks to Art Nelson and Nicole Muserilli for their excellent work in organizing and managing the elections and the assembly. I look forward to working collaboratively with the newly elected student representatives to enhance the experience of all students at Hall.

New Skateboard Policy Rolling Along
Last week was the first week of the new skateboard and rollerblade policy. Over a dozen students have submitted parent permission forms and are checking-in their boards and blades before school every day. We are seeking a parent volunteer for the morning and the afternoon to help manage the storage container. It is a great way to say hello to the students before or after school and to help make it possible for students to ride to school. If you are interested in helping, please contact me.

Chalk-a-Lot
The Chalk Festival is this Friday, October 3rd from 3:15–5:00pm. The blacktop on campus will provide the canvas for professional artists, students and parents as they express themselves. Come see art, create your own art and listen to the Hall band perform. It will be a great afternoon for the whole family.

Students Recognized
Honor Roll and Principal’s List students were recognized last week for their spring fourth quarter grades. Students received certificates during first period and ice cream during lunch (guess which one generated more enthusiasm).

One Eighth Down?
This week we are half way through the first quarter. Progress reports will be mailed Friday, October 3rd. The first quarter will end October 31st.

—Daniel Norbutas, Principal

QSP MAGAZINE SALES SUPPORT STUDENT ACTIVITIES!

Did you know that QSP Magazine sales support a large portion of student activities at Hall? Student Council plans great events for our children throughout the year. Let’s
make sure they have our support. The QSP assembly is October 9th — be ready to help your child drum up as many sales as possible this year. Turn in dates will be Oct.
16th & 23rd and we’ll need six adult volunteers for each turn in day.
—Contact Susan Mitchell or Marlene Foster with questions or to volunteer.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

The beginning of the year is a great time to start thinking about community service. Those of us who volunteer our time and talents know the satisfaction this brings. Many of us wish we could do more. Let’s share the spirit of community with our children by encouraging them to get involved with an activity or organization that benefits others.
—Contact Ellen Karel & Chandra Denenberg Zieff with questions or ideas

Community Service at the Hall Chalk Festival
Those champion Hall students interested in participating in this fun event, and accruing hours towards your community service to boot, please sign up on the list displayed on the bulletin board in the Hall office! We need help selling pizza, setting-up tables, hanging decorations, taping squares on the black-top for our chalk drawing artists, and much, much more!
—If you can help, please contact Anne Doyle or Patty Fitch

MATHLETES!
Tuesdays, starting Oct. 7 • 3:15–4:00pm

Mathletes is a bit like after-school sports for mathematicians. Four times a year Hall mathletes meet with other schools for county-wide mathematics competitions at San Jose Middle School in Novato. Competition dates for this year are the following Tuesdays: November 18, January 13, February 24, and March 16. At Hall we have both a 7th grade team and an 8th grade team. The teams will practice on Tuesdays from 3:15–4:00pm in Mr. Pankler’s room. The first practice is October 7. All students are invited to participate. Sixth-grade students looking for a challenge may also attend the practices.

Mathletes Coach Needed: While Mr. Pankler serves as the Teacher Advisor for the Mathletes teams, we seek volunteers from the community to serve as coaches. Last year Larry Reed did a marvelous job as coach. There is a meeting for coaches on Tuesday, September 30, at the Marin County Office of Education.
—Contact Mr. Pankler (or call 927-6978, x2213) to be a math coach
