MESSAGE: December 15, 2003 |
Where in the World…
I was very proud to act as the master of ceremonies for the 2003
National Geographic Geography Bee competition held last week in
the library at Hall. Over twenty students have participated in the
Geography Bee this year. This group of kids has been meeting before
school every week to work together to hone their geography skills.
Seventh grade teacher, Lourdes Thuesen has again
provided her leadership and guidance to these intrepid geographers,
giving them a rich and enjoyable experience.
These students recently competed in
the Preliminary Competition. Seven
rounds of questions, beginning before
school and resuming again during lunch,
were conducted to determine the eleven
finalists. These finalists earned the right
to compete in the Final Round
Competition last week. The eleven
finalists were Molly, Sammy, Vanessa, Emma, Claire, Gabriel, Taylor,
Steven, Marco, Michael and Emilie.
A great crowd of students, parents and teachers turned out for
the Final Round. Eighth grade teachers Carolyn Pruden and Norman
Guerra-Shaner acted as judge and timekeeper, respectively. After
several rounds of questions which tested the students’ knowledge
of United States and global geography, the two finalists emerged.
Vanessa and Steven then went head to head in the Championship Round.
In the end Steven was the runner up and Vanessa was named the Hall
Geography Bee champion.
All of the Geography Bee students are
to be commended for their effort and
work throughout the year. I am
impressed by all of the students who
chose to give their time and energy to
expand their own learning. Everyone
who participated in the program came
out a winner.
Lourdes Thuesen has organized and
managed the Geography Bee
program at Hall for several years.
Every year she pulls kids together and
nurtures their curiosity. Under her
guidance the students learn a great
deal while having a great time. This
great activity would not have been
possible without her.
November Students of the Month
Grade level teams have chosen the
two Students of the Month from each
grade level for November. These
students have had a positive impact
on their classes. While working hard
and pushing themselves, they have
also supported the learning of others.
• Sixth Grade: John & Emma
• Seventh Grade: Emma & Peter
• Eighth Grade: Skyler & Maria Elena

of the Month are in the online Hall Bulletin, available by subscription
