PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: February 2, 2004

PTA & LCD
Last week computer teacher Bob Montes began the first round of staff development on the new LCD projector cart. Thanks to the generosity of the PTA, the staff at Hall has access to a portable computer and projector. This cart contains a laptop computer with a wireless internet connection and a Liquid Crystal Display projector that displays what is on the computer screen in clear color for the entire class. Teachers have already begun using it in the classrooms for PowerPoint presentations, sharing images from the internet and for student presentations. The staff training this week will acclimate teachers to the technology and discuss the many ways it could be used as an instructional tool. We are grateful to the PTA for their ongoing support in providing teachers with classroom supplies and instructional resources.

Lunchtime Intramural Sports Begin
This week marks the beginning of lunchtime sports and games with a three-on-three basketball tournament. Both boys and girls teams will compete for fun and prizes in an organized tournament supervised by counseling intern Brian Lynch. We are looking forward to a great week of games and hope to involve other sports and games throughout the year to spice up the lunch break.

Mathletes Solution Revealed
I had promised the solution to the Mathletes problem in my previous message, but neglected to include it. I know it may have been tough for some of you to wait two weeks to find out if you correctly solved it, but fear not, the solution is here.

Again, here is the problem:
You have two regular (1-6) dice, one red and one blue. How many different ways can you roll them simultaneously to have the result be an odd sum with a red prime number and a blue composite number?
Got it yet? The Mathletes students had two minutes to solve it in a competitive setting. Looking at the red die first, we know it can only be a prime number. Since a prime number is a positive integer that has exactly two factors, we know that the possible prime numbers rolled by the red die are 2, 3, and 5. With regard to the blue die, knowing that a composite number is one that has more than two factors, we can conclude that the only possible outcomes on the blue die that we need to consider are 4 and 6. Since the total must be odd, we find that there are four different ways to roll an odd sum (red 3 and blue 4, red 3 and blue 6, red 5 and blue 4, and red 5 and blue 6). So the answer is 4. Pat yourself on the back if you got it.

YEARBOOK PHOTOS
Friday , Feb. 6 • morning

For inclusion in the yearbook, group photos of students who participated in extracurricular academic and sports activities, as well as photos recognizing students who were chosen as Student of the Month or earned Honor Roll or Principal’s List status, will be taken in the library during periods 1-4 on February 6. Students will be released from classes to participate in these photos. It is each student’s responsibility to be in the library for the appropriate picture(s) at the appropriate time. Unfortunately group photos cannot be retaken at a later date or time.

BEAUTIFICATION DAY
Saturday , Feb. 7 • 10:00am-1:00pm

hardenbergiaCome on Saturday, February 7th, from 10:00am to 1:00pm (if you went to the dance, you can always come later!). We’ll plant Hardenbergia vines on some parts of the chain link fence, weed the area outside the fence along Doherty, and maybe spread some mulch. The ground is damp, so the weeds are easy to pull! Bring gloves and digging tools (always a good idea to put your name on them). Also, at the last work day, someone left a pair of green leather garden gloves; I’ll bring them on Saturday.

Bring any kids for community service, they’ll get their certificates same day.

DANCE CHAPERONES URGENTLY NEEDED!
The next dance for 7th and 8th graders is Friday, February 6th, from 7:00–10:00pm. We need 10–12 chaperones (to arrive by 6:30pm) for this event. Bottom line: no chaperones, no dance.
— Contact Rebecca Sarokin or Claudia Gropper for more information or to sign up

SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOLS?
We are looking for someone to act as Hall’s Safe Routes to Schools Representative ASAP. The representative will work with the principal, local police, town officials, and the county’s Safe Routes representative to ensure that Hall students are safe as they bike or walk between home and school. This is an important job, but it only takes a few hours a month.

8th grade drumming

All sixth grade students recently participated in a Caribbean drumming and dance workshop led by Wilfred Mark and funded through the Youth in Arts program. The workshop enriched our study of “The Cay,” by Theodore Taylor, a novel set in the Caribbean islands.
