MESSAGE: April 19, 2004 |
Student Release Drill Successful
Student Release Drill Successful
Hall Middle School participated in a
county-wide disaster drill on
Wednesday, April 7th. The purpose of
this drill was to define, practice and
reflect upon our student release
procedures. By conducting such a drill
we endeavor to improve and enhance
our procedures so that, in the event of
a real emergency, we are as prepared
as possible. The only way to do this is
to practice, collect feedback, learn and
modify.
I am proud of the way in which our
students, staff and parents handled a
challenging drill. We managed to
release over three hundred students
in less than an hour with a clear
record of who picked up each child.
We have already begun debriefing our
drill and making improvements.
These successes are the product of
the excellent work, cooperation and
patience of students, staff and
parents. During every phase of the
drill the students followed directions
and waited patiently to be picked up. I
commend the staff for their energy
and efficiency in carrying out their
roles in their first release drill. The
parents took time out of their day to
participate in the drill and patiently
worked their way through our
procedures.
A huge thank you goes out to the
members of our Safety Committee –
Jeff Winkler, Bonnie Kaiser and Mary
Connolly. These three have given
generously of their time to prepare for
this drill and for all aspects of
emergency preparedness at Hall. I
also want to thank the parent
volunteers who helped the day of the
drill: Scott Ebke, Ann Arabian, Diana
Putterman, Marinda Freeman, Chris
Diamond, Bonnie Kaiser, Mary
Connolly and Barbara Solomon.
Our drill also helped Neil Cummins
analyze their release procedures. Neil
Cummins sent representatives to
observe our drill and to participate in our
debrief.
While the drill was a success overall, it
did reveal some challenges and areas of
improvement. A main purpose of the drill
was to discover these issues so they
can be improved upon for the future. We
are addressing ways to increase the
pace of student release and reduce the
traffic congestion while still maintaining
accountability of all students. I welcome
your feedback and input regarding the
drill and how we can improve our
procedures in the future.
