The Fifth Grade Perspective

Mr. Boone and I visited all of the fifth grade classes last week to get some feedback from our newest students. We had a chat with each class, asking them what they liked about Hall Middle School and what they would like to change or improve.  On the list of things they liked about Hall were a variety of facilities and structures like the library, computer lab, music room, science room, soccer field, and new climbing structure.  For many of the Neil Cummins graduates, Hall also felt smaller and easier to navigate.  For one student one of the best things about Hall was the fact that there were “less little kids around that bug you.”  This was immediately met with the response from a classmate: “But think what we do to the eighth graders.”

Our students also had great things to say about the staff at Hall.  We heard praise for the classroom teachers, specialists and other staff.

Their recommendations for improvement were also interesting and helpful.  We heard about the need for more balls for check-out at lunch, more lunch tables in the shade, and hula hoops and jump ropes at lunch.

Along the lines of Mr. Boone’s message last week, we asked the fifth grades how they were being treated by the older kids.  The response was overwhelmingly positive.  In our sixth, seventh and eighth grade assemblies we had reinforced the expectation that students treat one another with respect and that the older students take care of the younger ones.  One fifth grader did express concern about how an eighth grader was treating her, stating, “My older sister is not nice, but that is because she is my sister.” Mr. Boone and I will be visiting other grade levels and following up with the fifth graders later in the year. We love hearing what our students have to say!

Site Council Parent Representatives

At Back to School Night on September 20, Hall parents will have an opportunity to elect new Site Council parent representatives.  Two parents are needed to fill vacancies and attend monthly meetings (third Thursday of the month 3:30 – 5:00) to guide the school plan, allocate state funding and manage the annual student and parent surveys. If you are interested, please contact me by the end of the week so you can be included in the process.
