Meeting of Thursday, November 18, 1999
1:30 pm (sharp!) • Hall Library

Meeting called to order at 1:30 pm.
Board members present: Lindsay McCrea, Donna Kilian, Debra Ziegler, Anne Gilberg, Kathy Grey, Kathie Cummins, Robin Moller, Becky Reed, Bob Cone, Rosanne Clifford.
Board members absent: Alexandra Cock, Robin Hamilton, Mary Sue Murray.

  1. PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
  2. APPROVAL of MINUTES from the last meeting
MSP to approve minutes of October 21, 1999.
MSP to approve minutes of October 27, 1999.
  3. TREASURERS REPORT — see attached report 11/17/99. Total Assets: $9,871.56 Note that lunch program income is not on target to meet budget projections. Lindsay and Kathie will reevaluate lunch menu costs and expenses and may re-price items. Will solicit student council input and will notify parents and students in advance of any changes.
  4. PRESIDENT’S REPORT
    • Old Business
      • Thank you from the counseling department: PTA budget includes stipend for the counseling intern as a thank you for their out of pocket expenses. In the past, this has happened at the end of the year, with checks routed through the district (which must withhold money). Since the expenses are up-front, and the money is actually a thank you gift, Lindsay paid the intern last month, and has received thank you letters from the intern and from the counselor. Recommended that this be handled the same way in the future.
      • Lunch Program: Seems to be running more smoothly. See notes above in Treasurer’s report.
      • By-laws: No report.
      • Parent Education 10/27: SAFE came and four students told their stories. Bob Cone would like them to talk to our students. Kathie Grey mentioned she’d heard good things about the Peer Summit put on by the San Marin High School students and asked if they could come to Hall. Bob said that the Redwood peer counselors had been at Hall today, and that their leadership group would be here soon.
      • Honor Roll and Summer Books Ice Cream Social 11/17: Went well.
      • Campus Beautification: Mr. Ng worked with the 7th graders last trimester. Will work out some details with the custodian. Impatiens are being replaced with ferns, plan to do more rockwork. Fun, little complaining. Will do it with the 8th graders this trimester.
    • New Business
      • Dance chaperoning 12/4: Becky is getting chaperones.
      • 1/4ly Newsletter: Delayed, as Heidi Fuller (editor) has been ill. Would like a liaison to the Hall PTA board.
      • Career Day: Scheduled for February 25, 2000. Pam Akazawa, Nancy Jensvold, and Susan Becker are chairing it, and are meeting with Bob Cone next week.
      • Graduation committee: Chaired by Dee Hadfield, Leslie Cunningham, and Corinne Grant. First meeting scheduled for December 1st at 7:00 pm.
      • Community Service: Warm clothing drive went well (Rotary project). Holiday Baskets (Canal Ministry) are next. Each homeroom will be responsible for gifts for one person or for one meal. Will put reminder in bulletin regarding “due date” for hours.
      • Marin County Student Transportation Survey: Marin County Congestion Management group is surveying kids regarding transit. Upcoming workshops.
      • Website: National PTA is available to help with a PTA Website. Ours is planned to be part of the Larkspur Schools site.
    • Ideas and Dates for Future Meetings
      • Future Parent Ed. Meetings:
        - January 18th – Carol Halpern will make a presentation regarding the library.
        - Considering Diane Provo, Alan Carr, Lynn Onton (Romancing the Risk).
        - On December 6th at 9:00 AM the principals, PTA presidents, and parent ed chairs from all the schools which feed into Redwood will meet to discuss possible joint presentations put on by the Redwood Area Council.
  5. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Potable Water at Neil Cummins: Dr. Wilson reported that during exploratory borings made as part of a structural analysis being performed at Neil Cummins, E. coli bacteria was found in the soil under the MUR. Drinking fountains have been closed off, and portable water dispensers have been installed pending the outcome of water potability tests being performed by MMWD. Hall water is being tested as well.
  6. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
    • Field Trips: 7th graders went to Jewish synagogue today. Will be going to St. Pat’s and mosque in Mill Valley.
    • Assemblies: Presentation to 8th graders by RHS peer counselors at assembly today re sexual harassment. Good presentation.
    • Fall writing sample: will come home Monday.
    • Math Facts: 25% of students at each grade level don’t know them well. Teachers will be focusing on this.
    • Cal-Skate: field trip on Friday for top magazine sellers.
    • Ricky Martin concert tickets: [A parent] donated two tickets. Proceeds from $5 ticket raffle will be donated to Marin Food Bank.
    • Please: read Barb Wilson’s weekly messages, and call Bob when we have suspicions about things he should know about.
