Henry C. Hall Middle School PTA EXECUTIVE BOARD MINUTES

Meeting of Thursday, January 20, 2000
1:30 pm (sharp!) • Hall Library

Meeting called to order at 1:30 pm.
Board members present: Lindsay McCrea, Donna Kilian, Kathy Grey, Kathie Cummins, Robin Moller, Becky Reed, Bob Cone, Rosanne Clifford, Alexandra Cock, Mary Sue Murray.
Board members absent: Robin Hamilton, Debra Ziegler, Anne Gilberg.
Guests: Dena Van Derveer, Barb Wilson.

  1. PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
  2. MINUTES
MSP to approve minutes of November 18, 1999.
  3. TREASURERS REPORT — see attached report.
    • 1/19/00 Income less expenses (since 7/1/99): $7,318.97
    • 1/19/00 Account balance: $11,536.61
    • Kathie will include a sheet in next report indicating “where we are” with respect to actual spending as compared to our budget.
    • Audits: Robin Hamilton will perform them semi-annually.
  4. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
API (Academic Performance Index): (See attached packet.) Barb Wilson presented the good results of the State’s new school ranking system. This year the ranking was based solely on SAT9 scores. (Ranking input may change yearly.) Hall scored 883 on a 200-1000 scale. 800 is considered a “very high performing school” (schools scoring under 800 will be provided an improvement target by the State). 99% of Hall students took the SAT 9 test. Even when compared with “schools like ours” Hall shows very strong results. (Hall is in the 8th decile when compared only with those schools). BUT this is a limited picture since it is solely based on a test.
  5. PRESIDENT’S REPORT
    • Old Business
      • Thank yous: Received a number of thank you cards for the holiday cookie baskets assembled by Debbie Botts. Also from outgoing School Board members for the orchids.
      • Lunch Program: Confusion about price increase. Bagels will remain at the old price this year. All other entrees went up in price on January 1st. There is a case of “cup-a-noodles” in the kitchen to offer to kids if we run out of entrees.
      • By-laws: Alexandra reported that she had received more input from the State PTA, who wanted more revisions (see attached).
      • Graduation: Committee has met. Headed up by Dee Hadfield, Leslie Cunningham, and Corinne Grant. School Picnic is Wednesday, June 7th at Hamilton; 8th grade picnic is Friday, June 9th.
      • Parent Education on 1/18: Carol Halpern made a very informative presentation about changes at the Hall library.
    • New Business
      • PTA page on the District Website: Dena Van Derveer is expanding the site, updating it on Tuesdays. PTA page will include the budget, approved minutes, and email links to board members.
      • Parent Ed: Next year the Redwood Area Middle Schools will combine their parent ed presentations, at Redwood. Our next parent ed meetings will be on 1/25, 2/1, and 2/8 with speaker Allan Carr, from 7-9 PM.
      • Dance Chaperoning on 2/11: Mary Sue Murray is getting chaperones, needs a few more.
      • Career Day: Scheduled for February 25th, 2000. Pam Akazawa, Nancy Jensvold, and Susan Becker are chairing it, and have 40 participants lined up. Sue Boley will organize the kids’ schedules.
      • Honor Roll Ice Cream Social: scheduled for February 4th, 11:30-1:00. Call Dale Davidson to offer to help.
      • Quarterly Newsletter: Deadline is January 28th. Searching for writers.
  6. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
    • Marlene Basuino: Returned home from the hospital last Saturday. Appreciate the cards and flowers, please continue to send.
    • Cecilia Burgess: ESL specialist has broken her wrist.
    • Mural: Eighth graders are working on a cooperative social studies and art project this week, painting an 8’x40’ mural (replicating one destroyed by the Mexican government in Chiapas), in honor of civil rights. Students are working with an artist through a program sponsored by Youth in Arts.
    • Field Trips: 7th graders went to the Mill Valley mosque yesterday.
    • Site Council: meeting today. Will be looking at last year’s parent survey (see attached), working to create a new one which builds on previous data. Survey will go out at the end of March.
    • Student Council: Elections will be held on the 27th. Election is set up so that students run for a general position on the council, then select which specific position they will hold after the election.
    • Earthquake and Fire Drill: January 27th.
    • Report Cards: Friday, January 28th.
    • Safety Workshop for District Employees: Saturday, January 29th.
    • Marin Symphony Presentation: Upcoming.
    • Poets in the Schools: Thank you for supporting.
    • Art: Site council is sponsoring a 0 period art class Thursday mornings at 7:45, taught by Laura Jane Coates.
    • Writing Sample: Students took an interim writing sample last week. 25% of them were scored (results are in the bulletin). Instruction appears to be having an effect on students who perform below grade level, bringing up their scores.
    • Lunar eclipse: tonight.
    • Japanese educators visit: very interesting - see bulletin. The Junior High School model there is no longer working. Seem to be having experiences similar to those here in the 60’s and 70’s.
  7. OPEN DISCUSSION
    • Ross Parent Ed notice
    • Book Passage: Remember to mention the Larkspur School District when shopping there (they’ll donate a percentage of your purchase to the Foundation).
    • Library: See list of things you can do to support the library.
    • Banned books: 8th graders are being asked to read a banned book. The library page on the Website has links to lists of them.
    • Site Council: searching for someone to represent them at the Key Communicator’s meetings.

Meeting adjourned at 2:40 PM.
Next meeting: February 17, 2000 at 1:30 PM, Hall library.
