Henry C. Hall Middle School PTA EXECUTIVE BOARD MINUTES

Meeting of Thursday, January 18, 2001
1:15pm • Hall Library

Meeting called to order at 1:20pm.
Board members present: Ann Arabian, Principal Bob Cone, Alexandra Cock, Kathie Cummins, President Anne Gilberg, Kathy Grey, Lindsay McCrea, Robin Moller, Mary Sue Murray, Jeannie Perry, Becky Reed, Debra Ziegler.
Guests: Patti Doherty, Business Officer Mike Slater, Superintendent Barb Wilson, and Linda Wolfe.

  1. PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
  1. BUSINESS OFFICER’S REPORT — Mike Slater
Mike reported on the upcoming construction at Hall, which will start this June. The construction site will be fenced with a plywood fence on the “student” sides, chain link elsewhere. Equipment access will be from Piper Park. The 6th grade wing will become district office space, special ed, and (existing) computer lab. The 6th grade classes will be in the relocatables to be placed on the asphalt this summer. “Indicator piles” will be placed in the field area during spring break. The driveway will be relocated. The MUR building and current office will remain as is until April 2002, when they will be converted into the library/media center and classrooms. The lockers will be relocated to create a construction wall between the MUR construction area and the students. The graduation-related activities for the current 7th graders will need to take place in an alternate location. Work is to be completed in time for the start of school, 2002. Result will include new science labs, computer lab and library adjacent to each other, a big-enough gym, on-site parks and rec facilities, etc. Mike reported that the City agencies have been very supportive.
  1. MINUTES
MSP to approve the minutes of November 18, 2000.
  1. TREASURERS REPORT — Kathie Cummins
See attached. $18,245.65 in the bank. Lunch program has netted $9655.44, dues $3547, which is on budget. Patti Doherty will take over as treasurer while Kathie is traveling (1/30-4/20).
  1. PRESIDENT’S REPORT
    1. Holiday Cookie Baskets — prepared and coordinated by Kappy Reed and Ann Arabian, went very well. Received 2 thank you notes.
    2. Lunch program:
Prepay agreement — At our 4/13/00 meeting, we decided not to enter into a new agreement with the district to provide subsidized lunches to prepay students, because we didn’t have a “certified food handler,” which was a requirement. (The state reimburses $2.50/lunch. Our lunches cost $3.50-$4.) Carol Johnson (office staff) took the class and became a certified food handler, so Anne signed the agreement with the district. Discussion about subsidies resulted in a motion. MSP to subsidize the lunch program for the rest of the year. Anne will follow through.
Caesar Salad — Is a very labor-intensive menu. We are bringing in Caesar Salad from Picnic, resulting in no profit. Discussion. MSP to increase the cost to $2.50, and continue to offer chicken on the side. Anne will announce in the bulletin. Will review lunch offerings and costs in the spring.
NC Lunch Program — See attached. Discussion. No action.
    3. Emergency Phone Tree — Reviewed packet sent in June. (Call everyone on “your” page.) Tree is started by Barb calling Bob, who calls Anne.
    4. Parent University — Upcoming on February 3rd.
    5. Dance — Upcoming on February 9th. Kathy Grey will handle 14 chaperones. (There was a recent dance for 12-15 year olds at the CM Rec Center, sponsored by the Rec Dept. Apparently went well.)
    6. Graduation Meeting — Went well, need more help.
  1. STAFF’S REPORT — Linda Wolfe
Upcoming Chinatown tour for 7th graders on March 1 & 2. Linda will announce it in the bulletin (back by 2.) Mr. Ng has prepared a video about Chinatown, including his personal experiences.
  1. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT — Bob Cone
    1. Safety — Earthquake drill last week went well, observed by the police and fire departments.
    2. Family Life — Upcoming for 8th graders. RHS peer resource group coming here soon.
    3. New Students — Four new students this week. Very well received by the students here. The new students really appreciated it.
    4. Student Council — Elections next week.
    5. Report Cards — Will be sent home on January 31.
    6. Technology — Computer teacher is doing a voluntary in-service with the Hall teachers after school on Wednesdays.
  1. OPEN DISCUSSION
    1. Board Attendance — Anne received a request from the Board that a PTA rep attend meetings. Anne will see that someone goes, perhaps rotate among us.
    2. Nominations — Lindsay will put something in the Bulletin recruiting members for next year’s board.

Next meeting: Thursday, February 15, 2001 at 1:15pm.
Meeting adjourned at 2:20pm.
