1:15pm • Hall MUR

Board members present:Ann Arabian, Bob Cone, Karen Deist, Kathey Grey, Nicole Muserilli, Diana Putterman, Becky Reed, Barbara Solomon, , Susy Vrouvas, Susan Wirta
Board members absent: Leslie Alden-Crowe, Shawn DeMont, Liz Krakow, Anne Morrison, Jeannie Perry, Rebecca Sarokin

  1. PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
The meeting was called to order at 1:20pm.
  1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
A motion was made by Becky Reed to approve the minutes of October 16, 2001. The motion was seconded by Karen Deist. Minutes approved as corrected. (A correction was made as Rebecca Sarokin was referred to as a sixth grade vice-president rather than a seventh grade vice-president).
  1. TREASURER’S REPORT
    1. Treasurer’s Report —
The CD was automatically renewed. It gets 2-3/4% at Bank of the West and will mature in 3 more months. We paid our first TJs bill of $3000. We have taken in $20,000 in receipts and had $12,000 in expenditures. We made about $9000. Our PTA membership goal was met. We collected $3700 in dues.
    2. Auditor’s Report —
Last year’s auditor’s report for the first 6 months of 2000 was distributed. It was prepared by Alexandrea Cock, last year’s PTA auditor. See attached.
  1. PRESIDENT’S REPORT
    Old Business
    1. Lunch program
There will be a new form for Tjs for the next 3 months. We can keep pasta or do something else. They have many choices. We will need an alternative for the kitchen beginning on 4/01/02. We may expand TJs to 2 or 3 days. TJs requires no kitchen. Won’t really need an oven. May need a sink. Can possibly use a portable. At Neil Cummins, fruit comes ready to serve. We might want to have prebagged fruit like at Neil Cummins. (We get that from Costco).
    2. Membership
Our goal of $3750 has been met. We are right on target.
    3. QSP Magazine Sales
Our students sold $30,000 worth of magazine subscriptions. 40% of sales went to student council’s budget. This is $12,000.
    4. Health and Safety
Bonnie Kaiser sent out the lists to those parents who volunteered to be in charge of calling parents if needed.
    New Business
    1. Grade level V.P. reports/updates
6th Grade News: The Hall pumpkin carving activity went well and was enjoyed by all.
7th Grade News: The children had a field trip to a mosque. Becky went on this trip. She said it was very interesting. The kids were spoken to before the trip. The timing couldn’t have been better considering world events in the last few months. The mosque in Mill Valley that we went to is run by a congregation from India (near Bombay). It is not Middle Eastern.
8th Grade News: Had a great meeting about graduation. There is nothing to be done until after the holidays.
    2. Community Service —
Our Adopt-A-Family program is coming up. Heidi Fuller is chairing that event. We a e doing it through the Canal Community Alliance. Its a little different from last year. We are collecting $2 per student for a total of $50 per family member. The 6th grade has a family of 5 people. The 7th grade has 4 people and the 8th grade has 4 people. It is for a total of 3 families. They will get gift certificates and will be to places that the family wants. They get to do the shopping for themselves. We will also collect loose change after lunches for the next few weeks for this. December 12 is the deadline to bring in money.
    3. Hospitality —
We are making hospitality baskets for the staff. They will be distributed on 12/20, Thursday. We need volunteers for this.
  1. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT — Barbara Wilson
The district superintendent came to speak a few words. We awarded a contract to start construction at Hall and the work will begin soon. They will begin next week. Over the Christmas holiday, they will be pile driving, moving the district office to a different site with a crane. The work will hopefully be on budget. There is still no money for a field. We won’t know until the project is done. The budget task force is planning an informational meeting with parent and staff. Questions have come up about how we get money, etc. We will meet with the staff on 12/17 to answer general questions on our budget. We would like to have one for the PTA as well. Could Ann coordinate a meeting with Hall and Neil Cummins PTA members? Call it a budget informational meeting. It would consist of the budget task force and committee parents. The Board will need to make a decision by mid February regarding any staffing changes we may need to make. If there need to be layoffs, we need to give notice by 3/15. (This doesn’t definitely mean someone’s out of a job, its just a possibility). There was a question regarding any ballpark figure as to budget cuts. No negotiated salary cuts yet this year.
  1. PRINCIPAL’S REPORTBob Cone
    • There is a speaker tonight at 7:00pm at Hall. The speaker is On Broil(?). The topic is “Why Children Hurt Children.”
    • We are preparing for the National Geography Bee. Ms. Thuesen is working with 24 kids in the morning before school starts. This number will decrease to 10 children and then 1 finalist. They will need to pass a written exam to go to the nationals. On 12/14 at 3:30pm in the MUR we will have our geography bee for the 10 finalists.
    • There will be an assembly with an Acapella group (Till Dawn) on 12/21 at 11:40am.
    • The Redwood High School Peer Counselors come to work with the 8th grade students for orientation to high school. On 12/6 they will present 3 skits about peer pressure, drugs and alcohol. Pressures that come with attending high school. They will be at Hall every other week at lunch for 10 weeks to work with our kids.
  1. OPEN DISCUSSION
    • At this time, the board members present did a walk around the school to see what changes were coming with the construction.
    • Finally, the Talent Show will be on 3/15.
