The meeting was called to order at 1:30pm.
- APPROVAL OF MINUTES
A motion was made by Becky Reed to approve the minutes of November 17,
2001. It was seconded by Rebecca Sarokin.
- TREASURERS REPORT Karen Deist
The lunch program is on schedule as far as profit goes. The expenditures
were higher than estimated. The deadline for classroom expenditures
is February. We havent spent much of the estimated expenditures
in this category. There is $5000 left for extras for Bob and the teachers.
We will be spending more in the scholarship category than what was estimated,
but less in other categories like health and safety. We can use this
surplus money elsewhere. See attached sheet for bank balance and 2001-2002
budget.
- PRESIDENTS REPORT Ann Arabian
Old Business
- Community Service
The Adopt-A-Family program was very successful this year. We used
the Canal Alliance and purchased gift certificates instead of actually
buying gifts this year. There was $1400 donated for this program.
January 26 is the Annual Campaign Appreciation Potluck Dinner. There
will be children volunteering at this function and they will earn
community service hours. March 30 there will be an Easter egg hunt
with Dick Whitley at the Larkspur Rec. Dept.
- Lunch Program
The lunch program is going along well. There was a slight increase
in participation of TJs lunches. There are 175 children participating
and they can get seconds. As of April 8, the multi use room will
be off limits. We wont have refrigerators, ovens or sinks.
We will have to change our lunch program. Were hoping the
school will be done by September 2002, but it probably wont
be. There probably wont be a multi use room for the first
half of the next school year. A suggestion was made by Jeannie to
inquire regarding using the empty Lark Theater for some of our school
needs.
- Hospitality
In the hospitality category, the PTA got Carol a farewell bouquet
of flowers and the new secretary, Jane Shapiro a welcome gift.
New Business
- Grade Level Reports
Eighth Grade: nothing to report.
Seventh Grade: The dance is coming up on Friday February
8. We need 14 volunteers from 6:40-10:15pm.
Sixth Grade: There is an upcoming field trip to the
Exploratorium on Friday January 25. Also, on February 8, the students
will be making valentines for senior citizens.
- Legislative
Looking good. The state and federal governments dont seem
to be cutting education funding at this time.
- Career Fair
There is a career fair on Friday, February 15. Brochures are going
out next week to parents. the children need to fill these out and
choose which speakers they want to hear. They can go to about 5
of them. It works on a first come first serve basis. There will
be 60 speakers, 5-6 panels. For example, there will be a technology
panel, a hair and beauty panel, and so on. We need volunteers at
8:00am and again at around __. Laurie Becker is catering a breakfast
for the speakers. Lunch will be supplied by comforts.
- Membership
Three new families signed up for PTA.
- PRINCIPALS REPORT Bob Cone
- There will be a fire drill today at 2:15pm. The kids know the
alternate place to meet due to construction.
- On February 13, at 8:35am at the Neil Cummins staff room, there
will be a Budget Review Task Force Meeting.
- Before the Christmas break, a child was found on school grounds
with marijuana in their backpack. The administration handled it
appropriately. We will have speakers periodically come and speak
about drugs, peer pressure, etc. There was a question by a board
member about what the consequences are for being found with drugs.
If its less than one ounce of marijuana and is not for sale,
then its a discretionary suspension. If theyre selling
drugs, then its a mandatory expulsion case and goes before
the school board. If a student is expelled, they would usually go
to an alternative school in Marin.
- Coming up on Fridays, there will be bridge lessons offered. Its
a series of 10 lessons.
- In the sixth grade, there will be a poet come in to work with
the students.
- For the seventh grade, there will be an African drum assembly.
- On January 28, at 6:00pm at Hall, there will be a construction
update by the construction company, mostly regarding Neil Cummins.
- On February 2, at Novato High School, there will be an all day
parent education program.
- On February 5, one teacher from Neil Cummins at each grade level
will meet with the math teachers at Hall to review math skills,
and make sure the children are prepared for Algebra in the eighth
grade.
- Tomorrow, the Academic Performance Index will be released. Hall
was rated 10 on a 1 to 10 rating system. Then out that 10 subcategory,
they are also ranked. Last year they were ranked 10/8. This year
they were ranked 10/10. These ratings are based on the Star 9 tests,
and some other categories.
