Henry C. Hall Middle School PTA EXECUTIVE BOARD MINUTES

Meeting of Tuesday, May 20, 2003
1:15pm • Hall Middle School

Board Members Present: Ann Arabian, Kathie Cummins, Marilyn Dineen, Claudia Gropper, Nicole Kowalski, Trish Mihalek, Cynthia Peterson, Diana Putterman, Becky Reed, Rebecca Sarokin, Barbara Solomon, Susy Vrouvas, Suman Vyas, Susan Wirta

Welcome:
The meeting was called to order at 1:20pm.

A motion was made to approve the minutes of March 18, 2003 and April 22, 2003 by Rebecca. This motion was seconded by Cynthia. Both sets of minutes were approved.

Treasurer’s Report: Kathie Cummins
We have $26,000 in the bank. We haven’t paid the bills for April , May or June lunches though. I will have a report for the full year in the middle of June. I estimate that we will have between $9,000 and $10,000 left after we pay for the lunch program. We also need to still pay for the sound system and the $500 toward graduation. Please see attached treasurer’s report.

Old Business:

  • Hall Musical Theater update: Becky
Next year, we will have a Fall show rather than a Spring show, and it will be “Bye Bye Birdie”. The teachers prefer the fall as 8th grade gets so busy in spring. We need a producer for the show. Ken Greene (a pianist) may want to play a large part in the production next year. He would like to make CDs for all the children in the cast. He’s wondering how much money we could spend on these CDs. He will volunteer his time. Since we paid $1000 for a pianist last year, does $1000 sound all right as a music budget for the show? Another question is: Should we pursue trying to retrieve the $750 we paid to Joshua Rich, the musical director who quit? Should be pursue this in small claims court? (After a short discussion, it was decided not to pursue this and just to write it off.
  • Drivers for the End of the Year Picnic at Indian Valley College:
So far, we have about 23 drivers. The drivers will get advance notice as to timing and who is in each car. 7th graders will leave at 8:30 from Piper Park, 8th graders will leave at 8:30 from the circular driveway, and 6th graders will leave at 9:00 from in front of the office. We need one parent volunteer to be at Indian Valley checking everyone in.
  • Congratulations: to our new slate of PTA officers, elected May 15th, following Open House.
  • Thank you: to Kappy Reed for our Teacher/Staff Appreciation Luncheon.
  • Last Jamba Juice day: Wednesday May 28th
  • Last TJs lunch: Tuesday, June 10th. If requested, a $5 refund will be given for Monday June 9th. The school swim party coincides with the already paid for TJs lunch.

New Business:

  • Grade level reports:
W e had a successful 7th/8th grade dance last weekend.
There are ongoing meetings to plan the 8th grade graduation dance.

Principal’s Report: Marilyn Dineen
• Thank you for the teacher/staff appreciation luncheon. The staff really enjoyed it.
• Thank you to Ann for the after school clean up committee before open house.
• Open house was a great success. People loved seeing the new construction. Everything looked great.
• Scheduling for next year’s children is occurring right now We schedule those going into 7th and 8th grades. We will have 125 children coming in, so there will be 5 classes. Four classes will have two teachers; one for science/math and one for language arts/social studies. One class with have the same teacher for all core classes.
• A suggestion was made to donate our lost and found items to a program called “Image for Success”.
• The Exploratorium changed its fees and we had to pay an extra $83. Could the PTA cover this added amount? A motion was made by Barbara Solomon to cover the extra $83 paid to the Exploratorium. This motion was seconded by Diana. The motion was unanimously passed.

Teacher’s Report: Trish Mahalek
• Thank you for the classroom supplies and for the teacher/staff luncheon.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:20.
