Meeting of Tuesday, October 21, 2003
1:15pm • Hall Middle School

Board Members Present: Barbara Solomon, Kathie Cummins, Rebecca Sarokin, Ann Morrison, Diana Putterman, Jeannie Perry, Susy Vrouvas, Ann Arabian, Trish Mihalek & Daniel Norbutas.
Board members absent: Liz Krakow, Susan Wirta, Claudia Gropper, Scottie Spurzem, Anna Gravley & Cynthia Peterson.
Guests: Marianne Rafter & Bob Cone.

WELCOME:
Meeting was called to order at 1:15pm by President Barbara Solomon.

MINUTES:
A motion was made by Kathie Cummins to approve the minutes from the last executive board meeting on September 16, 2003. Jeannie Perry seconded it.

TREASURER’S REPORT
See attached report.
We discussed giving a gift of up to $8,000 to the District, for a signboard at Hall.

6th GRADE VP REPORT:
Pumpkin Carving on Oct. 31st: Paradise Foods Produce Mgr, Norman Louie, is the “contact person” for the pumpkins. He has 2 bins of pumpkins, arriving at the store, on the 30th. 6th graders will select a pumpkin & carve it during 6th period. Extra pumpkin carving tools are needed, so it was moved by Ann Morrison to spend up to $80 on additional carving tools. Susy Vrouvas seconded it.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT:

  • Oct. 24th 7th/8th grade dance: 12 people have volunteered to chaperone the dance, with several back-ups. This is the last dance Dick Whitley will be in charge of. Art Nelson will be taking over for him.
  • Chalk Festival: Holding the Chalk Festival, right after school on a Friday, was a huge success! So far, PTA has made approximately $290.
  • Membership: We’re just about where we were last year at this time, approximately 50%.
  • Emergency Phone Tree: As of last week, the emergency phone tree has been distributed by Health & Safety Chairs, Mary Connolly & Bonnie Kaiser.
  • QSP Magazine Sales: Over $16,000 worth of magazine had been sold by the first turn-in date of Oct. 16th. The goal is $30,000. Parent volunteers are still needed for the last turn-in date of Oct. 23rd.
  • Restructuring of VP positions: Barbara Solomon suggested that PTA restructure the duties of the 6th, 7th & 8th grade VP’s. It would help the President tremendously, if the VP’s oversaw assigned committees. Eighth grade VP’s could oversee the Graduation Committee & 6th grade VP’s could oversee Photo Day, for example. We will vote on this at our next meeting.
  • Bye-Bye Birdie: Going great! The Director, Becky Reed, is very happy with the cast.
  • 8th Grade Graduation: The 8th Grade Graduation Committee is looking into renting a boat on the SF Bay for the Graduation Dance on June 9th, 2004.
  • Signboard: Diana Putterman moved we give up to $8,000 to the District to purchase a signboard for Hall. Ann Arabian seconded it.
  • Beautification: Kathie Cummins moved we give an additional $1,000 to Beautification. Rebecca Sarokin seconded it.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT:
Bob Cone wanted everyone to know what a wonderful event the Chalk Festival was. He thought it was a great idea to hold it on a Friday afternoon, after school.

This year, the District is receiving free & reduced priced lunches from the Tamalpais District (instead of San Rafael) & it now costs more. Bob asked PTA to cover the difference in the new price of lunch from the old price of lunch on Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays. He didn’t know exactly how much the difference would be. We are postponing a decision until we have further information.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT:
Daniel Norbutas reported that the new skateboard policy is going well. Twenty students have turned in permission forms. A large bin has been purchased for the students to place their skateboards in upon arrival at school.

Staff Development Day went well. They looked at Star Testing data from last year & observed those students compared to the students they have this year. Teachers evaluated strengths and weaknesses of their grade level. They enjoyed a bar-b-que lunch at Neil Cummins with the entire district staff.
$150 was requested to help pay for the bar-b-que lunch.

Hall Staff is most concerned with break & lunchtime student behavior. Mr. Norbutas is speaking with every grade level, one class at a time, telling them the importance of showing respect to their peers & to authority figures. There are 3 campus supervisors, plus Mr. Norbutas. During lunchtime, the halls are closed & only the gym restrooms may be used.

Mr Norbutas said there is a tech proposal to put together “mobile carts”, each containing an I Book, LCD projector & other items. It would cost $3,300 per cart & he’d like to see 1 purchased each year, over the next 3 years, for each grade level.

He also talked about the idea of an “all-weather shade structure”. That would be nice!

Saturday, October 25th is a clean-up/work day, sponsored by the Beautification Committee Chair, Maija Norstad.

TEACHER LIAISON REPORT:
Trish Mihalek said the teachers greatly appreciated being able to purchase classroom supplies with PTA money.

Meeting was adjourned at 2:26pm.
