Henry C. Hall Middle School PTA
EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING MINUTES

Meeting of Tuesday, May 18, 2004
1:15pm • Hall Middle School

Board members present: Barbara Solomon, Kathie Cummins, Rebecca Sarokin, Claudia Gropper, Jeannie Perry, Ann Morrison, Susan Wirta, Cynthia Peterson, Scottie Spurzem, Liz Krakow & Ann Arabian.
Board members absent: Susy Vrouvas, Diana Putterman, Anna Gravley, Daniel Norbutas & Trish Mihalek.
Guests: Bob Cone, Becky Reed & Marianne Rafter.

Welcome:
Meeting was called to order at 1:20pm by President Barbara Solomon.

Minutes:
The minutes from the last Executive Board meeting on April 20, 2004 and the General Membership Meeting on May 13, 2004 were approved as written.

Treasurer’s Report:
See attached report from Treasurer, Kathie Cummins.

Remarks from Becky Reed ~ Talent Show & Tam Union HS District Parcel Tax:
The Hall Talent Show has 4 bands this year — a drummer, 2 bands & Ken Greene’s band.

There are lots more boys participating this year.  Becky will not be directing the Talent Show next year, (assuming there is one), & suggested finding a parent helper for the Director.

The dress rehearsal is May 27 at 6pm and the Talent Show is May 28 at 11:48am. Parents are encouraged to attend.

On behalf of the TUHSD (Tamalpais Union High School District), Becky highly recommends parent involvement in the upcoming Parcel Tax Measure. If the measure passes on the November 2nd ballot, students from the CML School District will all benefit. Becky submitted a request for Hall PTA to contribute to the Parcel Tax Campaign. Jeannie Perry suggested an amount of $250.

Ann Arabian moved that we contribute $200 to the Parcel Tax Campaign, and Jeannie Perry seconded the motion. The board approved the motion, but amended the motion to approve subject to the Treasurer finding that there are sufficient funds for this unbudgeted item, once all the expenses are finalized for the year.

Superintendent’s Report:

  • Bob Cone reported that the Board of Trustees is looking at March 8th, 2005 as a possible ballot date to renew the Corte Madera Larkspur School District Parcel Tax.
  • He thanked everyone for attending the auction & for helping to make it such a huge success.
  • Our school district budget is in good shape and we’ll be receiving the same dollar amount from the state as anticipated.
  • Interviews are being held for the following positions: information technology person, instrumental music teacher at NC, 6th grade LA/SS teacher, 6th grade math science teacher, 7th grade math teacher to replace Mr. Pankler who will be gone for one year, 2 special ed teachers at Hall, a 60% position at NC for ESL students, and 4 or 5 NC classroom positions. So far, 137 students are signed up for kindergarten in the fall. It’s possible that 2 new portables will be needed at NC because of the large incoming kindergarten class. There’s a possibility of a 2/3 combination class again. The incoming Hall 6th grade class is about 115 students.

President’s Report:
Barbara Solomon reported that the Chevy’s & California Pizza Kitchen fundraisers made $250. She said it was fun and easy to promote, but maybe not worth the effort again. We have now set aside a total of $1,250 towards playground improvements at Hall.

She thanked the PTA board for helping to make the new Hall signboard a reality, as well as the new mobile media carts. Barbara noted that “Jamba Juice Wednesday” is now offered year round and “ Pizza Day Thursday” started this past year, with both fundraisers being successful.

Committee Reports:

  • Hospitality: Barbara thanked Hospitality Chair Kappy Reed and all her helpers, for the beautiful Staff Appreciation Luncheon.
  • Beautification: Barbara also thanked Maija Norstad and her volunteers, for all the wonderful work they have done on campus. A final beautification work party will be held on June 5th from 10am to 1pm.
  • 8th Grade Graduation: Everything is progressing nicely. Vicki Robbins is handling the dance decorations. They are described as “understated and elegant”. The kids will feel like movie stars! Chaperones are still needed for the graduation dance on Thursday June 10th. If anyone can volunteer, they should call Armelle Futterman.
  • VP Reports: There is a 6th grade social in the gym this Friday afternoon, May 21st. It is being handled by student council. The May 8th seventh/eighth grade dance was not very well attended. It was suggested that a May dance not be held in the future. The 8th grade Great America trip was a long day and the park was very crowded.
  • Parliamentarian Report: Jeannie Perry asked board members to bring their blue binders to the PTA luncheon next Tuesday, at Ann Arabian’s, to give to their successors. Board members without a blue binder should write about the activities they performed, what worked & if they would do anything differently.
  • As a long term project, Barbara Solomon suggested that PTA consider a shade structure, similar to the one at Neil Cummins.

Meeting was adjourned at 2:20pm.
