President Rebecca Sarokin called the meeting to order at 1:15pm.
Minutes
The minutes from the last Executive Board meeting of May 18, 2004, and
the General Membership meeting on September 7, 2004 were approved as
written.
Treasurer’s Report
See attached report from Treasurer Barbara Kelly
Jamba Juice snack has begun and made $60 last week, on track for $1800
this year. Pizza snack revenue not yet clear. Have received membership
income of $4500 (60% of families) to date.
Teacher’s Report
Trish Mihalek thanked the board for PTA start-of-year funds. She expects
more teachers will join PTA after receiving their first paychecks. Trish
is available as PTA liaison to the staff.
Superintendent’s Report — Bob Cone
Bob invited us
to the upcoming school board meeting (held on 2nd and 4th Wednesdays)
where the parcel tax will be discussed. Topics will include election
date (probably March 8), amount, and duration. Jeannette Thorson and
Holly Bogin will chair the election, probably becoming active in December.
Phone bank calls will most likely be made in January and February.
President’s Report-Rebecca Sarokin
- PTA fundraisers: Jamba Juice and Pizza snacks started
last week. Went pretty well. Expect $9000 in profit on pizza. Rebecca
thanked Jean Suliteanu for setting up the new snack options when TJ’s
(lunch company) went out of business with very little warning. (PTA
is unable to offer a full lunch program which competes with the State
without also meeting the state’s lunch requirements.) Burrito
and bagel profits are expected to be $8200 each. Rebecca would like
to expand the snack program to 5 days a week, with a program chairperson,
with managers for each day reporting to the chairperson.
- Membership: 145 families are members of PTA (60%).
Our goal is 80%.
- Jobs to be filled: Safe Routes to School needs a
chairperson.
- Chalk Festival: Will be held October 1. Leigh Estes
is doing a very organized and artistic job of setting this up. The
festival this year is shorter than in years past, following last year’s
model where it was found that as the time shrank the participation
increased.
- QSP Magazine Fundraiser: This provides operating
funds for the student council. There will be an assembly on October
4. Marlene Foster and Lori Calzaretta are chairing it.
- Dances: The 7th grade VP’s will get 10 chaperones
for the first dance on October 29. There are two dances scheduled for
this year. The second dance (in May) is for 6th, 7th and 8th graders.
There will be a graduation dance for 8th graders on June 10th.
- 6th Grade VP Report: Paula Turner and Anne Gilberg
plan a pumpkin carving event on October 29 at 2:30. Paradise Foods
will donate the pumpkins.
- 7th Grade VP Report: Scottie Spurzem and Ann Morrison
are exploring an activity for the 7th graders. Earth Day? Art? Community
Service?
- 8th Grade VP Report: Ann Arabian and Claudia Gropper
reported that Marinda Freeman will chair the 8th grade graduation.
- West Side Story: Becky Reed is directing 66 students
in the play, with rehearsals going well. Performances will be the weekend
before Thanksgiving.
- Logo wear: Sharon Gurwitz will take it on. Haven’t
established pricing yet. Need to decide if it will be a fundraiser,
or if it will just support itself.
- Campus Improvement: Maija Norstad is working hard,
doing a fabulous job. She needs volunteers to help her do the work.
- Parent Education: Jeannie Perry went to the Education
Task Force (ETF) meeting. She reported that MCDS does a “community
read” where they sell a book, the school community reads it,
and they gather with the author to discuss it. Suggested there be two
books, one with a “boy” topic, and one with a “girl” topic.
Red Ribbon Week is coming up, plans to have a guest speaker from Phoenix
Academy. Would also like to have an Internet expert as a guest speaker,
to warn us about “red flags” to look for. Parent University
is upcoming too. Counselors have agreed to facilitate a “parent
book club”. Attendance is always an issue with parent ed programs.
- Parcel Tax: Holly Bogin is hoping for many volunteers
to help work the phone banks.
Principal’s Report — Daniel Norbutus
- Election Assembly: will be held this Thursday. 20
students are running. HMS is part of a documentary on student elections,
to be released next summer.
- Study Hall: Daniel is investigating an “after
school academic support program”. HMS can be reimbursed by the
state for some costs. Need 13 (failing) students to cover instructional
costs.
- State Tests: will look at results as a staff on
November 12 to see how the results are trending. 8th grade test scores
always nose-dive in the spring.
- Play Structure: Opened last week, very popular.
Many “spinning” activities. No longer able to park on the
blacktop, as the new paving can’t support the weight of cars
without damage. Gates are now kept closed.
- General: Great start to the school year. 340 students,
4 new teachers.
TUHSD Parcel Tax
Robin asked for volunteers to help staff the phone banks this week for
the TUHSD parcel tax.
Meeting was adjourned at 2:25pm
