Welcome
President Rebecca Sarokin called the meeting to order at 1:15pm.
Minutes
The minutes from the last Executive Board meeting of September
21, 2004, were approved as revised (to include 8th graders at the spring
dance).
Treasurer’s Report – Rebecca Sarokin
See attached report from Treasurer Barbara Kelly
Teacher Representative Remarks – Trish Mihalek
Trish will talk to teachers about joining the PTA. Rebecca will
ask the membership chair to put a note with an envelope in each teacher’s
box. Trish pointed out that the 6th grade pumpkin carving and the report
card distributions are scheduled for the same afternoon. Regarding the
QSP magazine sales, she thinks student enthusiasm and participation are
down; also that the teachers appreciate that the prizes are being distributed
after school this year. She mentioned that everyone seemed to enjoy the
chalk festival.
Superintendent’s Report – Bob Cone
The trustees meet tomorrow night. There will be a report on the three
year analysis of the STAR and ETF testing, focusing on how to improve
education.
Student population is growing. There are 144 kindergarten students this
year. The district is doing a new demographic study (the last one was
done 8 years ago, was expensive, and of limited use). The district is
passing out registration intention forms at parks, preschools, and neighborhood
groups. He passed out forms for the board to pass out to their neighbors.
The study results should be available December or January and will help
focus the discussion regarding where to house the additional student
population (reopen San Clemente? Move 5th grade to Hall?)
Regarding the land behind the new field: most of the property beyond
the fence belongs to the City of Larkspur. The City has plans to build
a new police station and is considering relocating the Corporation Yard
in order to gain more space for the police station. One of the sites
they have considered is the space behind the school.
President’s Report – Rebecca Sarokin
- PTA fundraisers – Jean Suliteanu:
lunch snack program is going well. Burrito day is a success, bagels
less so. Jean is looking at other offerings for next semester and will
send out a questionnaire in December regarding preferences.
- Membership: is at 65% (less than years past) Plans
to publicize member list. Asked the board to look at the list and recruit
friends who haven’t yet joined.
- Hospitality: Thanks to Tricia Kay for doing a great
job.
- Chalk Festival – Leigh Estes: Thank you to
Leigh for a very successful chalk festival. It raised $360. Discussed
the purpose of the festival— art, community building, fundraiser?
Ideas to increase the art quotient: students prepare with art classes
beforehand? Provide gridded artwork project to work on as a group?
Have the middle school students buddy with elementary school students?
Hire someone like Chris Cruickshank to facilitate artwork by those
timid on their own? Start it during school (either have everyone do
it for PE that day, or follow an assembly day schedule which has all
the children out on the blacktop at 2:30)? Have some “featured” artists
(could be Hall students)? Separate the Hall student area from the NC
student area? Have separate areas for each grade level?
- 7th Grade VP Report: Still exploring a seventh grade
activity. Doing OK getting dance chaperones.
- 6th Grade VP Report: Paradise Foods is donating
150 pumpkins and plastic bags for the pumpkin carving activity.
- 8th Grade VP Report: Things going well.
- Logo Wear: Sharon Gurwitz, Daniel Norbutus and student
council working on designing and making things.
- Parent Education: Phoenix Academy panel (2 students,
2 parents, and 1 administrator) will be here next Tuesday at 7. The
school is chartered for students with substance abuse issues. This
fits in well with Red Ribbon Week. The Community Read will be facilitated
by our counselors. Plans to set a date in January, and another one
at the end of March.
- Campus Improvement: Another work date is scheduled
for this Saturday, 10-1.
Principal’s Report – Daniel Norbutus
- After School Academic Support Program: started yesterday.
3:30-4:30 M/W, also T/T. Have 9-10 students each day.
- Play Structure: Has spoken to each homeroom about
the rules.
- Rainy Day Lunch schedule: 6th graders in two classrooms
in the 7th grade wing, 7th graders in the gym (largest class), 8th
graders in the library. Need rainy day lunch helpers.
- QSP: will be over on October 21.
Meeting was adjourned at 2:30pm
