EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING MINUTES

Meeting of Tuesday, November 16, 2004
1:15pm • Hall Middle School

Board Members Present: Bob Cone, Anne Gilberg, Claudia Gropper, Barbara Kelly, Trish Mihalek, Robin Moller, Ann Morrison, Daniel Norbutus, Jeannie Perry, Marianne Rafter, Rebecca Sarokin, Scottie Spurzem, Paula Turner
Board Members Absent: Ann Arabian, Diana Putterman
Guests: Elizabeth Emerson

1. Welcome
President Rebecca Sarokin called the meeting to order at 1:00pm.

2. Minutes
The minutes from the last Executive Board meeting of October 19, 2004, were approved as revised (to correct “fire station” to “police station”).

3. County Tobacco Education Program – Elizabeth Emerson
Elizabeth Emerson presented a report on youth smoking prevention (see brochure). Marin County used to have one of the highest rates of tobacco use in the state. A few years ago there was a lawsuit (counties vs. tobacco companies) to get money to pay for tobacco cessation. Marin County received $27 million over 25 years. The resultant programs resulted in a middle school smoking rate reduction by one third over the past 4 years (now 9%). The money has also been used to crack down on stores who sell to minors. However, some of the funding is now being diverted to meet County infrastructure needs.

4. Treasurer’s Report – Barbara Kelly
See attached report. Income and expenses are on track to meet our projected budget. Last week’s Jamba Juice sales were high due to sales of surplus at Neil Cummins.

5. Teacher Representative Remarks – Trish Mihalek
The 6th grade pumpkin carving went well. Elliott Rodgers is going to produce a web-based photo CD for 8th grade graduates this year. Seventh grade: discussed doing a culturally oriented activity. Trish will talk to the teachers and see if they want help from the PTA.

6. Superintendent’s Report – Bob Cone

  • There is a meeting this afternoon about the district’s communication goal: improved communication between the school and the community.
  • There is a board meeting tomorrow night to discuss the parcel tax—will probably be set at $289/year for the first year, with a 5% annual increase up to 6 years. They are inviting community input.
  • Demographic study is discovering many incoming students.

7. President’s Report – Rebecca Sarokin

  • PTA fundraisers: The lunch program has put out a survey regarding preferences for next semester’s menu.
  • Donation for the Parcel Tax Campaign: a motion was passed to donate $250 to the parcel tax campaign.
  • Membership: 90% of the teacher’s are members, 60% of the families.
  • 6th Grade VP Report (Paula Turner): Pumpkin carving went well. Paula sent a thank you card/poster and a copy of the thank you in the Hall Weekly Bulletin to Paradise Foods.
  • 7th Grade VP Report (Scottie Spurzem): No news.
  • 8th Grade VP Report (Ann & Claudia): Met with Marinda Freeman about graduation. Discussed graduation, brunch, and dance scheduling. They will discuss it further.
  • Logo Wear: Sharon Gurwitz is working on it. Scottie will make an order form.
  • Campus Improvement: Another work day is scheduled for this Saturday.
  • Parent Education (Jeannie Perry): Next event will be a community read (not gender specific as previously planned). May read The Teen Years (11-14 year olds) by Susan Panzarine, or Get Out of my Life but First Take Me and Cheryl to the Mall.
  • Emergency Phone Tree: will be coming out soon.

8. Principal’s Report – Daniel Norbutus

  • West Side Story: coming up soon. Will not be an assembly performance.
  • QSP: will be scheduling laser tag for December 2 or 3.
  • New Counselor: Molly Cohen was previously at Balboa High School. Seems to be going well — she’s continuing the ongoing groups, and will help with the parent ed night.
  • Star Test Results: at the last teacher work day they worked with the twelve findings from their consultant to develop improvement plans. Will present conclusions next month.

Meeting was adjourned at 2:00pm
