1:15pm • Hall Middle School

Board Members Present: Ann Arabian, Bob Cone, Anne Gilberg, Claudia Gropper, Trish Mihalek, Robin Moller, Daniel Norbutus, Marianne Rafter, Rebecca Sarokin, Scottie Spurzem, Paula Turner
Board Members Absent: Barbara Kelly, Ann Morrison, Jeannie Perry, Diana Putterman
Guests: Lori Glass

1. Welcome
President Rebecca Sarokin called the meeting to order at 1:15pm.

2. Minutes
MSP to approve minutes from the last Executive Board meeting of November 16, 2004.

3. Treasurer’s Report – Rebecca Sarokin
See attached report. Income is ahead of our projected budget. [not attached to web version of these minutes]

4. Teacher Representative Remarks – Trish Mihalek
Trish thanked the PTA for the holiday treats & libations, the LCD cart, the 7th grade drum assembly, the 6th grade field trip and for the staff polo shirts. Upcoming events: “No Name-Calling Week” (Molly Cohen will host some activities); book meeting; 6th grade valentine party; possible 6th grade activity on or near Earth Day (April 22).

5. Superintendent’s Report – Bob Cone

  • Governor’s budget proposal — includes additions and deletions to funding which amount to no net change, which makes passage of the parcel tax very important. Please write to the governor and his wife with your concerns.
  • Parcel Tax campaign — needs volunteers to make phone bank calls
  • Academic Calendar — draft will be proposed to Board at next meeting. Concerns: start school “later”, align with RHS calendar
  • Spaghetti dinner to benefit tsunami victims to be held at NC January 21. Student Council will serve; Michael Arrow and his band will perform. Suggested $5 donation to UNICEF.

6. President’s Report – Rebecca Sarokin

  • PTA lunch fundraisers: Program is going well. Thanks to Jean Suliteanu and Jan Smith.
  • Musical Theater: Becky Reed is retiring after starting the musical theater program 3 years ago. Lori Glass has a TV and theater background and would like to direct and produce the show next year. She would like to focus on it as an educational project, including discussion of method, character and script analysis, casting, and student musicians. Lori agreed to manage the Talent Show in the spring as a volunteer.

MSP to hire Lori to be director/producer of next year’s musical theater.

Further action included discussion about reimbursing Eladia Leddy for $500 she overspent on this year’s theater sets; and stipends for costumer and set designers (stipends are currently paid to the director/producer and the musical director).

MSP to reimburse Eladia $500, with the admonition that it will not be offered again.

There needs to be further discussion about the musical theater budget.

  • 8th Grade VP Report (Claudia) — Graduation committee has met and discussed possible dance themes and increasing fee from $50 to $65 per graduate. Next meeting is January 27. PTA discussed restructuring the activities on the last day of school (improve on last year’s 8th grade brunch at Piper); increasing fee to $60 rather than $65.
  • 6th Grade VP Report (Paula Turner, Anne Gilberg) — Planning Valentines’ Day party on February 11, 6th period, make cards for Meals of Marin to deliver with meals.
  • 7th Grade VP Report (Scottie Spurzem) — No news.
  • Logo Wear — Should be available soon. Rebecca has offered logo wear polo shirts to the staff.
MSP to allocate $500 to pay for staff shirts
  • Parent Education — Parent University will be at RHS on January 21. Michael Pritchard will be speaking at Neil Cummins PTA presentation on January 26. Book group (Right from Wrong/Riera) will meet on February 3.
  • Measure B (Scottie Spurzem) — Scottie passed out endorsement cards

7. Principal’s Report – Daniel Norbutus

  • National No Name-Calling Week — next week
  • QSP — top magazine sellers will be going to QZAR on January 19
  • Guests — hosting Korean science teachers on January 19
  • Report Cards — will be distributed January 21
  • Tsunami Dinner — at NC on January 21 at 6 PM
  • Election Assembly — January 28

8. Open Discussion

  • Emergency Phone Tree: worked pretty well when used to alert parents about high tides two weeks ago. Future versions need to include first names of parents. Consider making it available on the website.

Meeting was adjourned at 2:40pm
