EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING MINUTES

Meeting of Tuesday, March 15, 2005
1:15pm • Hall Middle School

Board Members Present: Ann Arabian, Bob Cone, Anne Gilberg, Claudia Gropper, Barbara Kelly, Trish Mihalek, Robin Moller, Daniel Norbutus, Jeannie Perry, Marianne Rafter, Rebecca Sarokin, Scottie Spurzem, Paula Turner
Board Members Absent: Ann Morrison, Diana Putterman
Guests: Helen Brenlan, Peter Martin, Phil Terry

1. Welcome:
President Rebecca Sarokin called the meeting to order at 1:00pm.

2. Presentation by Larkspur Library Board — Marianne Rafter, Helen Brenlan, Phil Terry, Peter Martin
The library was founded in 1913 by the Larkspur Women’s Club and has suffered from a chronic lack of space ever since. A library foundation was started in the ’70s, resulting in significant remodeling in 1984. Now, as library programs are expanding, the board is looking into new ways to house a larger library in a seismically acceptable space which includes meeting rooms, ADA compliance, a reference librarian, electronic security and adequate parking (modeled on Belvedere-Tiburon).

Comments about the Larkspur Library and the Board’s plans for its future should be addressed to larkspurlibraryboard@hotmail.com or the Larkspur Library Board of Trustees, 400 Magnolia Avenue, Larkspur, CA 94939.

3. Minutes
⇒ MSP to approve minutes from the last Executive Board meeting of February 15, 2005.

5. Superintendent’s Report - Bob Cone

  • Parcel Tax campaign — Thanks for our support
  • Round Table Meetings — about the budget are on-going.
  • Youth Drug Use and Abuse Panel — coming up

6. Teacher-Representative Remarks - Trish Mihalek
Ms. Cornaggia will be requesting money for a Robotics club after school. Ted Stoeckley will be requesting scholarship funds for the Exploratorium field trip. She confirmed that the 6th graders will be doing an Earth Day activity (decorating 126 bags for Paradise Market) during 6th period on April 27th.

7. President’s Report - Rebecca Sarokin

  • 6th Grade VP Report (Paula Turner, Anne Gilberg): No news
  • 7th Grade VP Report (Scottie Spurzem): No news
  • 8th Grade VP Report (Claudia Gropper, Ann Arabian): Graduation committee recently had a short meeting. A letter requesting $60 per student for graduation activities has been sent.
  • Parent Ed (Jeannie Perry) — Jeannie went to the recent parent ed program at Redwood. It encouraged students to stay busy to stay out of trouble. She is in the process of scheduling a PTA presentation by a counselor at Apple Family Works on a Friday morning in April.
  • Change in grade-level responsibilities — decided to reallocate responsibility for the Lost & Found and for Picture Day from the 6th grade vice presidents to the 7th grade vice presidents, effective at the end of March.
  • Round Table Plus — School budget in good shape now, due to passage of parcel tax.
  • Calendar items — Next meeting will be May 17th, as there will be no April meeting due to spring break. There will be an end-of-the-year luncheon at Ann Arabian’s on May 26th.
  • Superintendent — Bob Cone has decided to retire. Thanked him for his good work. Mary Jane Burke and Jim Orrell will manage the search for Bob’s replacement.

8. Principal’s Report - Daniel Norbutus

  • Odyssey of the Mind — Hall had two teams this year (6th and 8th grade). They both did well at last weekend’s competition.
  • Mathletes — last meet is today, teams have done very well.
  • SIP Day — coming up on March 18th. They plan to work as a whole staff, as departments, and at grade levels; focusing on gender issues in education, study skills, language arts, and how to help those who are struggling in reading and writing.
  • Master schedule for next year — in progress. Exploring having Advanced Band five days a week by having P.E. during zero period, band 1st period.
  • After-School Art Class — Six students have signed up. If the first session goes well, then future art classes may be offered.

9. Open Discussion

  • Parliamentarian Jeannie Perry asked for volunteers for the nominating committee. She also passed around a sign-up sheet encouraging current PTA officers to volunteer for next year’s board and committee chair positions.

Meeting was adjourned at 2:08pm.
