Henry C. Hall Middle School PTA
EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING MINUTES

Meeting of Tuesday, February 14, 2006
1:15pm • Hall Middle School

Board Members Present: Anne Gilberg, Barbara Kelly, Robin Moller, Ann Morrison, Daniel Norbutas, Rebecca Sarokin, Monica Sherman, Scottie Spurzem, Linda Sudduth, Ted Stoeckley, Paula Turner
Board Members Absent: Claudia Gropper, Rebecca Paul, Valerie Pitts, Sara Spero
Guests: Dena Van Derveer

1. Welcome
President Rebecca Sarokin called the meeting to order at 1:20pm.

2. Minutes
⇒ MSP to approve the minutes from the last Executive Board meeting of January 17, 2006.

3. Treasurer’s Report (see attached) – Barbara Kelly

  • Lunch Program – budget projection was that the lunch program would generate $15,000 income for the PTA this year. It appears that it may be twice that! Sam’s Grill still hasn’t billed us for fall semester
  • Musical Theater – program broke even
  • Chalk festival – lost a little money. However it is not characterized as a fundraiser, and made some big multi-year expenditures.
  • PTA membership – up ($4,855)
  • Outdoor Ed – NC PTA will pay the deposit this year. The wrapping paper proceeds will continue to accrue for it. The incoming 5th grade is large. We need to create a line item in next year’s budget to reflect this.
  • Computer Lab – money is set aside, pending summer installation.
  • RHS Grad Night – increase our donation amount for next year (?)

4. Teacher-Representative Remarks – Ted Stoeckley

  • 6th grade will take a field trip to the Exploratorium on March 9th. $7/student to be paid by parents. Need drivers. Ann M offered to make reminder calls to parent-drivers.
  • Thanks to PTA for contributing to Egyptian field trip.
  • Ted reminded us that it is against LSD rules for parents to “stop” elsewhere on the way to or from field trips.
  • 7th grade field trip to Chinatown coming up on March 14, 15, and 16.
  • 8th grade will make a field trip to Marine World at the end of the year.

5. Superintendent’s Report – no report

6. President’s Report – Rebecca Sarokin

  • Lunch Program – Jean and Jan are doing great. Still need some volunteers.
  • Logowear – looks great. Mandy and Nancy are placing another order. Broke even (not intended to be a fundraiser).
  • Career Day – next Friday. Karen Berg, Danelle Leong, Bernadette Bantley and Paula Strand have done a great job.
  • Internet Safety Parent Ed – great, informative, good tips. Jeannie Perry is looking into another presentation in the spring, this one to the students (one for each grade).
  • Website/Paypal – Dena Van Derveer made a presentation regarding using Paypal (free on-line payment service) for making payments to PTA (lunch, membership, musical theater tickets, logowear, graduation). She can put a registration form on the PTA website. The advantages of a Paypal account include simplified bookkeeping for the treasurer and convenience for the purchaser. The intention is to set up an account which incurs minimal transaction charges. No apparent downside. Board gave her the go-ahead to set it up.
  • 6th grade VP – Monica said the Valentine’s activity went well, and that Meals of Marin was very appreciative. They would like to come talk to the 6th graders about what they do. Ted asked if they had a video available, as an assembly was impractical. He also pointed out that this activity fits in well with the “character counts” program he is developing.
  • 7th grade VP – Anne reminded everyone about the lost and found.
  • 8th grade VP – Ann reported that grad night is moving forward, led by Eladia Leddy, Lori Glass, and Lori Calzaretta. They will start actively working on it next month. Grad gift ideas included improvements to the courtyard outside the teacher’s lounge. Ted will ask the teachers for comments. Still need to hang up last year’s class gift.

7. Principal’s Report – Daniel Norbutas

  • Grad week schedule distributed Graduation will be on the last day of school.
  • The new gym sound system has been installed and tested.
  • Coffee Chat was well attended (20 people). Discussion topics included heavy backpacks, homework, state standards, the Foundation (some people feel there’s a hard-sell atmosphere — it was suggested that the “in any amount” donation be emphasized)
  • Choir is being included as part of 6th grade fine arts.
  • Electives – what do we decrease to have more of them? Do we extend to a 7-period day? (Cost of this option is about $250,000 per year.) Lengthen the school day by 10 minutes? Cut SSR? Reduce lunch by 10 minutes? Daniel is looking into it. Reed, Ross, and Kentfield are now starting to teach Spanish in elementary school.
  • African drummer’s assembly will be held for 7th graders tomorrow. PTA budget includes a line item to help fund it.
  • Career Day this Friday. School ends at 12:45.
  • Faculty meeting this Friday regarding classroom configurations for next year.
  • Drop-off – Studying it.

8. Open Discussion

  • There is a date conflict on June 8 between the Hall band spring performance and the Redwood graduation. Daniel will look into it.
  • TUHSD is considering putting a completion bond onto the June ballot and will be voting on the final resolution on February 28. • Scottie suggested we purchase another ladder for convenience in updating the reader board. Money for this is already available and approved, so she has the go-ahead to do it.
  • Beautification work days — it was agreed that it would be OK to schedule one for a weekday. There has been very little weekend participation.
